in the clear?

Hey everyone

I had a question about how the Academy judges the rest of my application after I have already received a letter of assurance. I would also like to know what the rest of my year will look like in terms of meeting any further requirements for the academy.

I completed my application at the end of August and included everything (good SAT scores, medical qualification, bgo interview...etc) besides my nomination which probably won't be until December.

I received my ACT scores this weekend (they were pretty low 26 reading 27 math) and I am guessing this was due to the lack of adequate prep for the test. After reading my scores however, I realized that I had sent it to the Naval Academy when I saw it listed on the bottom of my score sheet. A little irresponsible but I must have thought it was a good idea at the time.

The letter of assurance itself presents some ambiguity about a guaranteed offer of appointment since it later states that it is contingent upon completing the remaining admissions requirements.

I completed the requirements before these scores, so does that mean I am in the clear?

If not, should I call the academy up and tell them to disregard the scores?

Not sure what to do exactly, and I wonder if I am over analyzing this situation.

You should contact your Admissions Officer and discuss the matter with him/her. This is the only individual that can give you a knowledgeable answer to your question. Good luck.

I decided to write my Blue and Gold officer tonight to see what he thought. Hopefully, since these scores are still in the mid 50% I won't be scrutinized since I still have higher SAT scores. The academy web page seems to precondition candidates to not contact their admissions officers if their questions can be answered through another form of research. Does anyone know why this is?

Thanks patrish for your help.

Many questions candidates have can be answered by material contained within the Academy website or from their Blue and Gold Officer. Admission Officers are responsible for all of the candidates within their area and they simply do not have the time or ability to field a steady stream of questions from their candidates. That said, questions such as yours regarding your ACT results and how they may or may not affect your LOA are precisely the type of questions you should address to your Admissions Officer. No one else wil have the background knowledge of your file and LOA to answer that question. Blue and Gold Officers are very knowledgeable and helpful. But on this issue I would encourage you to contact your officer directly.

If you look at the back side of your LOA it tells you to contact your Admissions team "if you have any questions regarding your candidacy" and gives you a number to call.

This'll not be a problem. USNA only takes the highest. Candidates are not "punished" for lower scores than their best. With an LOA, it must be presumed that your scores on previous SAT submission(s) were beyond sufficient.

Ya, I think your fine. Exact same situation here with the ACT after my SAT's except I took all my tests last year. I think your in clear aside from nomination stuff.

I would not call re: the ACT scores. The academy recognizes that some score better on ACTs, some on SATs- they will take your highest scores to evaluate your application, which apparently has been already done.

What you need to secure is a nomination. I see you have been medically cleared as well, which is required.

As for the rest-
do not rest on your laurels and skate through the rest of your senior year. Keep your nose to the grindstone and grades high, stay out of trouble of any kind, work on your fitness and stay healthy.

Thanks everyone,

I confirmed with my BGO that only my high scores would be considered. As for this year, I took 6 AP classes (keeping up with my 3 varsity sports) to see if I could possibly work under the conditions of this schedule. It's intense so I'm getting some B's in my first quarter but hopefully, this will be a little prep for staying ahead of the academic steam roller next year.

Does anyone know if the Academy will be asking for mid-year reports? or will they ask for quarterly?

generally they will ask for your end-of-year grades, unless your are sitting on the fence academically and they want to see how you are performing in your senior year- but for most, your application will take into considering all grades up through your junior year, with final senior grades sent once you graduate- they are important, so keep them up to standard!

sweet, without a doubt I'll finish with A's but the rest of my friends seem to be stressing the first semester.

thanks.
