Many southerners ancestors took part in the Civil War. Thus, a sense of reverence and pride are established. The CSA and citizens wanted to a seperate nation and wished to be left alone. Being southern is an honor to most people, just like New Yorkers are proud to be New Yorkers or Englishman proud of their English heritage.

Actually, last night I slept outside for an all-night cancer fundraiser thing (well, we didn't sleep much haha), and it was absolutely FREEZING..it's not supposed to be 35 degrees at the end of April in North Carolina!!

Unfortunately Lablondie, many people interpret the flag in a wrong sense. A few years ago, I believe S. Carolina flew their confederate flag at the state capitol buildint. Some people made a fuss about it, but with Southern resolve denied the issue. The Confederate flag still flies above the capitol building. I wish to be a lawyer partly because of this travesty. I wish to fight against the scourge of the ACLU.

Justinian, you obviously have never been subject to prejudice under the Confederate flag. I've had crosses burned on my lawn with the flag flying behind it, pamplets stuffed in my mailbox with the flag emblazoned on it, and had things thrown at my friends and I from trucks flying the flag off the back, simply because my family is Jewish and I don't try to hide it. Many of my friends are of other races- Arabic, Korean, black, and Hispanic, and all have been persecuted by those same people. I have to worry while walking through the parking lot a few hours after school with my black or Hispanic friends because there is a fear of having things thrown at us by the guys in the lifted trucks with the flag on the bumper.

There's no way ANYONE can convince me that the flag does not stand for a heinous part of humanity.

People who hold racial intolerance with guise of the Confed flag are ignorant beyond belief. I am sorry that you have experienced this travesty. Although I must add that not all people who hold a Confed flag hold animosity against blacks or hispanics. Many of these people wish to preserve their southern heritage, not to show anger toward ethnic groups. Again, sorry for the torment that has ensued you. God Bless!

I did not realize you were a Virginia resident. I was just saying that UVA holds a distinct southern pride. You will witness it much, Virginian.
I wish Jerry Kilgore were victorious. Tim Kaines eyebrow is a travesty of annoyance.

I am going to say something prevocative. Ready? The ACLU is filled with a bunch of liberal politically correct bunch of greenie weenies who care nothing except for the life of MOTHER EARTH. The ACLU is the worst organization in the history of man. Down with the ACLU!

I don't hate the South (where did you get that?) ,but it is a very conservative place...not exactly my cup of tea. Some people will say some ridiculous things and have some ridiculous ideas...all under the guise of southern values. As SilverClover said, some people carry out their bigotry under the flag.

As for why I found the "southern=honor" comment funny...is because I think some people have a delusional view of the South. The idea of southern heritage, traditions, culture just boggles my mind sometimes...

Repeat, UVA may not be the best place for you. UVA is southern without doubt. If the south is not your cup of tea, then run as far as you can away for this institution. I am just a harbinger, Shaddix. Don't shoot the messenger!
