I was picked for income verification, and I do not mind except for one thing...I have all of my tax forms, but no W-2's because I lost them. Is it like a law or something that you have to have your W-2's in addition to your tax forms? Or can you just submit your signed 1040's and have that be that? And how do you get your W-2's if you lost them? I do not want to be out of the running for a Pell Grant or something because I lost my old folder of W-2's during a move. Thankfully, I still have my 1040's, but I am just worried.

why weren't your w-2's stapled to your 1040's?? You should be able to contact your employer and have a duplicate sent to you as long as you don't have to go back TOO far. I have been doing payroll for 14 years and every once in a while some one will call and say they lost their w-2, so I make a copy of my "employer copy" and send it to them.
Hope this works for you.

you can also contact the IRS and ask them to send you the reported income information -- it is like the W-2's.

Since I do my own taxes, I guess I am dumb for loosing stuff. When I graduate and earn the big buck$ I will be able to have someone do my taxes for me.

I thank you all for your responses.

What is odd is that I lost those W-2's a while back and was picked for income verification for this current summer semester and "they" did not ask for nor care that I did not fax any W-2's.

did your school request W-2's? I always get picked for income verification, but they do not require that I send in my W-2's

hsmomstef, my University is claiming that having all of your tax information with regards to income verification is a new rule. It is odd, because that is a rule which changed all of a sudden (like, in the span of two months). So, I am going to try to obtain my W-2's and go one from there. I thank you for your response.

income verification is not a new rule but it may be for your U
some schools may request it for everyone under a certain income- or there may be other triggers
either your workplace or the IRS will have your info- it is important for you to have it even if your school didn't request it

Emerald, the new rule at my University is that one must have every last bit of their income tax information, including the W-2, on file. For this Summer semester it was just that one must have their 1040's and no W-2's, like if you honestly could not find them or something. This is with regards to the income verification which the FAFSA folks pick at random.

I am fortunate enough that I live where there is a big IRS building and stuff, so it is all cool. My employer is stupid, so that has me upset, but at least I am an honest person who does her own taxes but has bad paperwork upkeep skills.

What I am wondering is when the FAFSA people and the Department of Higher Ed people and the IRS people are going to work together so that a student can just work real hard and file their taxes and just plainly fill out the FAFSA and have it automatically be checked with the IRS. I remember Bush passing a law about that and I am curious when it takes effect, because it will be kind of nice.

If you do your own taxes you are OBVIOUSLY NOT dumb!!! Invest in a small stapler and ALWAYS staple EVERYTHING together when you're finished. Good luck.
