If the school is requesting your w-2 forms, you need to send your w-2 forms. Yes, the tax form is supposed to have the same information, but some schools want to verify that what is on your tax form is the same as on your w-2.

Both my kid's FAFSA's get verified every time. They always ask for the tax returns (student and parent) and the W2s (student and parent). If they ask for them, send them.

Check with the school. We can often waive the W2 requirement for a single wage earner if there is no other income on the 1040. You may have to get copies of the ones you can't find - but if you don't need to, it will be worth that call.

Do your parents even get W2's, since they own the store? Or do they report earnings as income/loss from business on their 1040?

Call the school & tell them you are a non-tax filer. Ask if you need to fill out a non-tax filer statement, and ask if you will need to submit a W2 in that case. We do not require W2's for non tax filers, but some schools may.

I talked to my dad and said he never filed a W-2 for 2006 or 2008. He did for 2007 because my mom had a small job or something along those lines.

Btw, I failed to mention that this was for HEOP(Higher Education Opportunity Program) at Cornell, not for verification from FAFSA. I called and explained it was never necessary, so I'm off the hook.
