W-2's and Income Tax Form, both necessary?

Hello, I tried to search this, but the words are way too common in this forum, lol.

My schools are asking me to send my 2006, 2007, and 2008 Income Tax forms.
I already sent all three.

AND

They are also asking me to send my W2's for 2006 - 2008.
I only sent the 2007 W2 because I have it in the house.

doesn't an income tax form show everything a W2 has?

So is it necessary to send both?
I would call my schools now, but it's late and I really want to get this over with!!

If the school is requesting your w-2 forms, you need to send your w-2 forms. Yes, the tax form is supposed to have the same information, but some schools want to verify that what is on your tax form is the same as on your w-2.

I guess I have to go get both tomorrow. Thanks, Good to know!

Both my kid's FAFSA's get verified every time. They always ask for the tax returns (student and parent) and the W2s (student and parent). If they ask for them, send them.

Check with the school. We can often waive the W2 requirement for a single wage earner if there is no other income on the 1040. You may have to get copies of the ones you can't find - but if you don't need to, it will be worth that call.

well my mom and my dad file jointly, I dont file at all.

My mom doesn't work, well she works with my dad, so they file one person. (he owns a grocery store.)

Do your parents even get W2's, since they own the store? Or do they report earnings as income/loss from business on their 1040?

Call the school & tell them you are a non-tax filer. Ask if you need to fill out a non-tax filer statement, and ask if you will need to submit a W2 in that case. We do not require W2's for non tax filers, but some schools may.

Kelsmom:

I dont work, legally anyway, so I dont need to file anything for myself.

My parents report their income/loss from business on their 1040. But in 2007, they also had a W-2. I dont understqand any of this.

I'll call Cornell Tomorrow, (they are the ones asking) and see if they need both.

They most likely will in this case.

I talked to my dad and said he never filed a W-2 for 2006 or 2008. He did for 2007 because my mom had a small job or something along those lines.

Btw, I failed to mention that this was for HEOP(Higher Education Opportunity Program) at Cornell, not for verification from FAFSA. I called and explained it was never necessary, so I'm off the hook.
