Incoming Junior- chance me! Matches/reaches?

Hi! I am a female from NJ and I love history (especially colonial) and would love to be an American history teacher. History is my passion and I received the US History I Excellence Award this year given to one student in the whole grade (300+ students).
UW average: 92/93 Weighted: 96 (Grades will go up next year significantly)
2nd decile unfortunately because I go to a school constantly ranked in the top 20% of the state and students are very competitive.
Freshman/Sophomore: all honors (no higher level classes offered)
Junior Schedule: AP US History II, AP English, AP Psychology, Honors Constitutional Law, Honors Spanish, Physics, PreCalc
ECs: volleyball, Current Events Club, 3D Design Club, Science Club, starting a religion club next year, accepted as a freshman advisor, student government for 2 yrs so far, in the process of joining a colonial re-enactment group, babysitting
Volunteer: town historic museum, town library (tutoring), American Cancer Society, Center for Food Action

Chances at these colleges... Which are matches, reaches, low?

College of William and Mary
Allegheny College
Bucknell University
Dickinson College
Gettysburg College
Lafayette College
Lehigh University
University of Richmond
Penn State University
Rutgers University
Union College
Washington and Lee University

I am very good at writing essays and I have very good relationships with many teachers, so those portions of my application will be good.
If you know any ways I can improve my chances, please tell me! Thank you so much!

Hi. I think next year after you take the sat/act it will be easier to say your chances. Ecs look good. William and Mary is a match because of colonial Williamsburg. It is hard for an out of stater because law requires that about 75 percent of students accepted are from instate. Also 79 percent of students are in the top 10 percent of the class so try really hard to get your GPA up. Richmond seems good too. After your junior year it will be easier to tell.

P.S: I know a lot of info about William and Mary since it’s my top school and I’ve visited twice.

Hope this helped

We have some overlapping on our lists…

Anyway I see no major reaches on your list if your SAT’s/ACT’s are good. The schools you are looking at are very reasonable for your stats and you should be fine.

ECs look very good. If you’d like to really have a pick of schools, start studying for the SATs this summer. You’ll do better on your PSAT, well on the SAT (based on your history stats I’m thinking your good with facts and not as good with numbers. Could be wrong, but I’m the same way), and things will just be easier for you when the college app time rolls around and you have good scores.

If you start early, you could easily get into every one of those schools. I would recommend starting to study early. Sounds overachiever-like, but do it. You won’t regret it.

Just my two cents.

Thanks so much everybody!

William and Mary is my dream school, but I am worried about getting in. I am almost positive I can get up to the top 10%, but will my 2 college prep classes hurt me? They ran out of room in honors at my school.

I am definitely going to start studying for the SATs this summer, but through books and throughout the year I will take the school’s classes and hopefully out of school as well.

If you’re already lower on the ranking scale, and you’re trying to break that top 10%, I would be very careful with what could hurt you and what couldn’t. I would talk to a guidance counselor before the school year starts if possible.

ARisingSenior, what do you mean by that?

bumpbumpbump(:

In regards to the college prep thing, that’s a great thing for your guidance counselor to put in the letter of rec. At least at my school, guidance counselors’ letters often explain things like running out of room in honors classes, things like Honors English not being offerred to freshmen, et cetera. You really should not be penalized for something so out of your control!
