Incoming UCSD students, here is a MUCH better tool than ratemyprofessor.com

Home - CAPE Survey

I guess virtually every student in every class is surveyed about the course and the professor that taught it. The results are all online there.

This should help plan how much schoolwork each class will take, and which professor is good for which course, etc/etc.

I just planned my summer session with that site.

Ogi

Transfers are allowed to take summer classes?

I’m enrolled in MAE 101A, 110A, 130B, and 131A.

I just had to call the MAE department on the phone, and tell them I’ve completed the classes that are pre-requisites (took a few phone calls, had to be persistent).

In actuality, I do meet the pre-requisite requirements for each of those courses.

Oh, but you will be paying out the nose for tuition, there is no financial aid from UCSD for visiting students (which includes Fall 09 admits).

Ogi

I’m a transfer student, and I already signed up for a summer class. 1 class is a little more then $800.

I might consider it if my cc cancels summer… $800… =(

just hope that most students show up for that class. the bad thing is that a lot of people dont show up for bad profs, resulting in a higher rating

Wow, this is pretty neat. Thanks for the link~!

Those are heavily biased. Some people don’t show up, or fill in stupid answers (i.e. studying 20 hours a week for a music class…that just doesn’t happen.) Everyone thinks their grades will be higher than they really are (or it could just be that everyone doing the CAPE are good students who show up to class, etc.)

I think the most useful one is the do you recommend this professor. It’s been fairly accurate in my 3 years here. Ratemyprofessors is still a useful tool to see the teaching style, personality, etc. although that is heavily biased towards people who love or hate the professor.

[Untitled Page](http://registrar.ucsd.edu/reports/default.aspx)

That link is most useful for finding out the avg grade given in a particular class from the year before.

oh wow, that’s a useful link too…

I mostly used the cape survey for % recommending the professor …

I’m also trying to guess how much homework I can expect in my summer session courses (MAE 110A looks to be pretty nasty :frowning: ).

Sure there is some messed up data entries, but following a general trend of past years for the same professor/course can usually eliminate that IMO.

Thanks for the link though!

Ogi

That’s a great link.

As UCSDhopeful said, those are really biased and have become less & less accurate as time goes on.

I still stand by ratemyprofessors more so than CAPE.

problem with ratemyprofessor is that you get maybe 2 ratings per year for the professors that I’ve looked up (that is professors in the MAE department). That’s not enough to get a general trend.

Ogi

And you only get extremes–just like ucsdhopeful said.

You either find opinions from people amorously crooning over the professor who just gave him/her an A or all the brats whining and *****ing about the one who gave them a C (funny when you’re in the same class as those posters)

hi,

i was just admitted and SIR-ed and would like to take summer classes. they directed me to sign up as a visiting UCSD student. –> is this right? then you webReg?

i’m a psych major in thurgood marshall and am having difficulty trying to figure out what class i should take for the summer. i can’t find the sites to look for course catalogs.
