Hi, does anyone know if it's true that engineering majors are required to take a minimum of 4 classes each quarter? I remember reading this somewhere. It's supposed to be some new policy to force students to graduate in 4 years since people who stay 5 years takes up fundings and spaces that could otherwise be directed towards to incoming freshmens. I'm transferring this fall as a junior.

I never heard of that policy......................Although I would assume that most engineering students take 4 classes per quarter (except fall quarter of freshmen year, when the majority take 3).

most of the sample schedules they showed me at Engineering Open House had 3 classes for the first quarter.

How about for upper division?

Never heard of this four-course policy. Most engineering majors still take three courses per quarter during their freshman year -- especially those who are taking CS 32/33. Also, such a policy would require the HSSEAS OASA to update each of the engineering majors' sample curricula and re-post them in the HSSEAS Announcement booklet.

I found the site. Here's the link:

Does anyone know if this is still effective?

Yes it is, for the College.

That's not a minimum of 4 courses every quarter.

How come that table shows a progression of 16 units per quarter to satisfy ECP? I'm assuming that most classes are 4 units each so that the required 13th unit forces us to take a fourth class?

Well based on that page, it doesn't apply to engineers, but I'm not sure.

Anyways, there are quite a few 5 units courses. But regardless, you can alternate between 3 and 4 each quarter and satisfy that requirement and still complete an L&S major within reasonable time.

But for engineers, 4 courses a quarter seems quite typical. Anything consistently less, you'll never finish within a reasonable amount of time.

Crap. I'm taking 4 classes this quarter at my local community college. It amounts to 22 units. I don't know if I can do this for two years straight for upper division at UCLA. Should I look elsewhere, an easier UC? There are a lot of people who would want my admission spot.
