I wouldn't say the admission criteria is arbitary :-/ You can't say anyone who didn't deserve to get in got in.

Yeah, only "deserving" candidates get in... but then those who study 18 hrs/day are the ones who deserve to get in. By arbitrary I mean that the 'cutoff' is raised to an arbitrarily high level based on the number of applicants. There are 75+ applicants for every seat at one of the IITs. Thus, mere academic merit cannot get a student in. You have to make it through their benchmark, which honestly isn't justified for the kind of education you will get. It's hyped. Let alone personal qualities, ECs and talents; all they admit on is one day-long test.

Only yesterday there was an article in the Times of India, where the author pointed out that only 1 in every 120 get through into the IIMs as opposed to 1 in 17 for Harvard Business School. So you have to be among the top 0.8% of all applicants to get into a business school which is ranked #64th in the world! By contrast, Harvard's is #3. How do you justify that?

And I am speaking merely on the basis of numbers. Give me ONE big contribution an IITian has made to the engineering community... ? All they have done is earn themselves big salaries. Some donate a part of it, but in terms of real, tangible contributions to science and technology at large, there's nothing notable to speak of.

Hello all,

You know what? I love us Indians, haha. I mean, we're well-rounded. Yes, the Koreans may be badass at math and always get 750+ on SAT Math, but they suck at the verbal. Then we have the English, they're obviously good at the English, but often times, lame at math. But, Indians, we are awesome at everything! We always get well-rounded scores. It's a good thing if you ask me. Like Mr. Astrix here got a 750M and 740V = 1490 (well rounded). And me, I got 1410 (690M and 720V). It's a good thing, and I'm proud of each and everyone of "us", haha. Sorry, just a little emotional post :P

Dude!! :D You want scores, abhishek? I give you sucharita, our very own 1600. And akashbansal, 1510.

Anyway, nice to have you here at the Indian post

I know atleast 6 people with better scores than me at my school
and yes,I know 3 1600'ers

BTW astrix, what r u doing here so late in the night?

Why, writing an essay for Swarthmore, of course :)

Its freakin 3:30 am in India, akash what are YOU doing online so late :)

me I'm studying, got exams

that guy is an insomniac

studying? exams? wrong place to be, hello!! cc spawns the procrastinator in me at least

crappy thing for me is that i can't apply to IIT...stupid NRI quota has been taken off. I got 1350, i might have got in...dunno though, esp w. 4 APs and first rank.
660 V and 690 M is pretty well rounded...i got the highest V score in my whole school that is dominated by koreans...these mutha****as get 750 + in M damn it makes me mad..

the worst thing was that last year, this guy couldnt speak 2 sentences straight in english and he got a 790. I felt lake smashing his face in.

oh well. back to cricinfo...looks like SA is gonna kick our asses once again...

exactly calthecops, the DASA scheme has been abolished, because brainiacs in IIT think we are stealing their 18 hr effort. IIT should consider their domestic admission process again. I mean, a person is admited solely based on exams, which is stupid. They don't even see if you have a criminal record or something. Its study, study, and oh study. I say the reason American colleges are more popular to internatinal audiences are because they promote diversity from an individual's perspective, which sucks in indian colleges, especially in well roundedness. I know Murthy, Ksohla are all big shos from IIT, but think about it, if india were to switch to the american standard fof college admission, india would be producing atleast 5 or six billionaries every year. What do you guys think?

Yo!

All firstly, I'd like congratulate Se

. But, Indians, we are awesome at everything! We always get well-rounded scores.

My SAT I scores are: 600V + 650M = 1250 hahaha

To cut things short, something prevented me from getting an optimal score... even though I got the equivalent of a solid 1540 (790V 750M) on the AAT (our Indian SAT - ICSE students would know). Heck I even got second rank in the WHOLE WORLD in computer science achievement test (=Indian SAT II).

So, a 600 in SAT I verbal, 790 in AAT verbal, 710 in SAT II writing..hmmm
And a 650 in SAT I math, 750 in AAT math... ;-)

Moving on to my 12th board marks:

Math: 53
Chem: 69
Phy: 72
Eng: 88
Computer: 96

Well rounded?? Hehe. I still applied to princeton ed, though!

btw, mercsquad, where else are you applying... let's see if our rd schools are similar too

abe, cereal at 4 in the morning? heh. and yeah... finaid situation sucks. need pretty much full aid.

ED: princeton
RD: MIT, Harvard, Yale

How very typical!! I'm applying to the last two as a prank.. ;-) I don't even want to go to harvard or yale. But let them have their share of wannabe's, anyway! Fin.aid is dictating my choices and these four make the list for the only colleges which offer full aid to internationals.

Any suggestions for targets/safeties? I'll post my stats later.. and if the SAT scores are worrying you, well I'm taking the ACT in december.

What do you guys plan to do if you stay in India?

[/quote]
That's not a very polite thing to ask :-p

I'll proabably join NIT Suratkal

I guess you were kidding merc, but tis sadly a reality we might have to live with.

For me it'll prolly be this college out here if I do okay in my state engg exam

Harvard
akashbansal
sucharita

Princeton
astrix
mercurysquad

Stanford
callthecops
hello

Hope I didn't miss anyone. We're pretty evenly divided between Harvard, Princeton and Stanford :) Oh and there have got to be more Indians out here... jump right in!

An interesting stat: princeton has, as of now, 15 indian undergraduate students.

That means ~4 might be admitted this year (from the WHOLE of India) ;-)

astrix, course I was joking... I already completed my schooling this year and can't wait anymore.
