Indian Students - Here!

Hello everyone I have a question - What is the usual dress code for Welcome Receptions these universities hold?

@blaugrana9
Thanks for your input

Can you help me out a bit for my comparison of UW-M vs Purdue
Apart from rankings why should I prefer Madison (as you have suggested) over Purdue for Computer Science

Is anyone else planning of going to UWash?
It’ll be great if I know someone before I land up at the university if I accept my offer

PM me anyone who is going to UW-Madison. I have already accepted my offer!

DIdn’t any of you apply to Canada? I got into McGill. Financially McGill’s a good option. 1. The Canadian Dollar is less. 2. They have offered me a generous fin. aid. 3. They go give credit for AP Exams(that might save a term) 4. Work Study options are available which are a little tough to get in the U.S.

Which colleges are you guys finally going into? And have any of you kept any back up in India (just in case)?

@College98761 Mcgill is a great option academically too! I often hear that Mcgill is the ‘Harvard of Canada’.
I did apply to UBC, another great school!

I am kind of torn between Columbia and UChicago for econ-math.

Cool Ambitious. I guess UChicago would be better for the subjects you mentioned.

@KjInternational I’ve heard Purdue is extremely stressful and they have a low graduation rate. UW Madison has a great reputation and UWash too particularly for CS. Even if you look at the rankings bot UW and UWash are<11. Other factors are the student life seems great at UW, the campus too. Plus you have scholarship chances at UW after a year, whereas a friend told me Purdue doesn’t offer any. Don’t just take my inputs, research on the uni websites and Quora/Reddit threads about your particular interests. Cheers!

@blaugrana9
Thanks a lot for the inputs
I am doing my research too

Anyone else that can give an input ?
Thanks a lot

Btw @blaugrana9
Where did you get into ?
Are you going to Madison ? ( I suppose in another thread I read that you had got in there )

@KjInternational
Got into UW, UMinnesota, UMass Amherst, Purdue, Rutgers, waiting on Waterloo.
I’m 95% going to UMass because they gave me a decent scholarship and honors, and their CS program is amazing.

How do you guys decide if a program of a particular college is good or not? Ranking is obviously one of the main factors, but apart from it, what other things do you consider?

Anyone going to UCSD?

@college9876 Look at their courses for the major, - are they more theoritical or application based. Which one would you prefer? try talking to people at the university actually doing that course( you can do that through groups on facebook, and other social media platforms)

@KjInternational Congrats! All three of your universities are great and you are bound to have a good time ahead.

As already said, Purdue can be a stressful place and requires a lot of book-worming to graduate from.
However, U-Washington and UW Madison are both cool places. Horse a piece I’d say. Academically, both have great professors, classes and programs and rankings are also similar. Madison has renowned social life and indian students are pretty active too. Check this out-https://win.wisc.edu/organization/igsa. Where as UW students are relatively dormant. The weather and city nature of Madison also allows a couple good events to be organized. Also, I have heard that U washington students have a penchant for drinking and club partying (which I assume isn’t very likable)

Again, Madison has good sports team and facilities. Where as washington isn’t that famous for athletics. But Washington has beauty everywhere. You might like to have a lake visit and weekend time is heavenly. Students often have outings at weekends. In Madison, people do pretty much everything inside the campus, though it is mostly a group event and Indians are united well!

However, at the end of the day, it is your personal wistfulness that will get you into your place. But believe me, you will end up somewhere really wonderful.

Good luck.
Data collected from reliable places (friends at these universities and sister, who once had an internship there)

Drinking and club partying. Yup that’s me alright. Unfortunately I committed to Purdue :frowning: who am I kidding, BOILER UP!

@KjInternational I have committed to UW for CS!
their CS program is amazing and so is the campus
it’s a top party school (don’t know whether that’s a advantage/disadvantage)
You’ll find a lot of Indians there and in short you’ll love it there
Everyone here gets accepted as undecided but declaring and doing a CS major is very easy
yes there have been budget cuts and the fees is increasing year over year but you’ll love Madison and UW
(source: research and brother studied there)

@Indijat @akshatpradhan
Thanks for your advice

I am actually a bit concerned about UWisc cause the fees is definitely going to escalate and I am already having a tough time thinking about the fees now so I dont think I’ll be able to bear any more financial burden.
Nevertheless, congratulations Akshat enjoy your stay there and I hope you do well in your studies too.

I have almost decided to confirm UWash

If anyone of you know anyone going there or someone who is presently studying there pls ping me
I’d like to talk to them

Anybody scheduled visa interview?
