Indian Transcripts and Mark sheets!

Alright! So, I'm applying to Stanford, Cornell and some other Ivy League schools this fall. I do have a perfect 2400 in SAT I and >750 in SAT II. Though, I've some queries related to Transcripts.

I've my CBSE CCE Marksheet of 9th and 10th. I did my 11th from the same school but I switched to NIOS (National Institute of Open Schooling) in 12th Grade.

What am I supposed to send as in transcripts? Only the CCE CBSE Marksheet and the NIOS Marksheet?

As I'm applying to several colleges I will be sending photocopies of marksheets, Do I need to get them attested from the school?

If yes, then how am I supposed to get the NIOS Marksheet attested? (Since it was an open exam and I didn't attend any school for it. It's more like CBSE Private.)

I hope this makes sense. And for those who don't know about NIOS, It is a national board like CBSE, you just don't have to attend school for it.

Thanks! :D

You could send Final Report Card for each grade OR you could send it as a Transcript, ie. compile all grades on a single page for easy reference. It should reflect your class rank or percentile.

All photocopies have to be attested by your school, signed and stamped.

NIOS will have some issuing authority, maybe write to them or walk in if you are in the same city and get it attested. I think what you need is a Migration Certificate from NIOS, which they issue only on completion of a course. I think they have a Help desk.

Thanks for such a quick reply! It is really helpful. I’ve some more queries.

As some people say that the mail envelop should be sealed and sent by the school itself. Do I need to get the envelope stamped as well?

Can I get my forms filled by the Principal of my former school? From where I completed the 11th Grade. (Since I don’t have a Principal or Councillor for the NIOS thing.)

P.S: College Application is really a cryptic thing. I’ve to make variations every time. I just don’t want to leave a bad impression to Admission Officer on first sight.

And hey, thanks again.

Yes, the envelope needs to be sealed and stamped by the school.

Yes your school Principal can be your Counsellor, so he can take of all the formalities of one.

As long as you send the required documents, you are good to go.

@anialways: Looks like the OP finished 12th from NIOS. Can the 11th School Principal testify for the 12th? It would seem odd. If it is ok for the 11th School Principal to testify, one would imagine that any school principal can testify for any school.

@alien515: Congrats on the SAT scores. Obviously for 9-11 you can go to the old school principal. BTW, It seems like a great idea to switch to NIOS. Did it free you up to do other things you wanted to, or was there some other consideration? Please, no need to share any personal issues.

@anialways: Thanks a ton. You helped a lot. :D

@antialias: Thank you. Indeed, It was one of the best decisions I ever made. Actually my old school only allowed a work load of 5 Subjects at max, that too with options of subject packs like Science, Commerce and Humanities only. I switched to NIOS because they allow you to select any subjects you want, make a stream of your own, you can do a Science-Commerce hybrid as well. And with a work load of 7 Subjects.

It did give me the flexibility to concentrate more on my ECs. So yeah, It’s pretty cool! :D

I never said the Principal could testify for the 12 Report card. The NIOS Certificate will have to be attested. I think there is a category of people who can do that, Gazetted Officers.

[Gazetted Officers who certify your documents! - eResource](http://www.eresource.in/2012/02/gazetted-officers-who-certify-your.html)

BUt I do not see any reason why the Principal should have any problem or the colleges would have any issue with all other formalities of LORs, School Stamp, Signing of documents, etc. since the OP did not attend a regular school in the 12th grade.

And he is not any Principal, this is the Principal of the school that OP officially ended his/her schooling at.

If u have something to be attested and cant do much ask USIEF … They helped attest a few docs that the school couldnt attest in time… They are generally a lot of help :)

quiverfox : Thanks for your tip on USIEF

@anialways: I certainly understand writing LoR for the period 9-11. Now consider a student A going to a school with principal X for 9-11. And by extension, a student B also attending 9-11 going to a different school for 12th. A third student also 9-11 with Principal X, but going to yet another school. If you were Principal X would you put YOUR school stamp on the marksheets of all these different schools for Grade 12. I am not challenging you, I am trying to understand how it works. Perhaps you would not for all schools for Grade 12, but you might for, say, CBSE or NIOS.

As far as gazetted officers are concerned, the link you quoted is questionable. A gazetted officer is one who is listed in the gazette. It’s another matter that different people accept certification from, say, Bank Managers. But that apart …

All the gazetted officers are stating is that there is a true copy of a document. You could have a certificate printed in your printer saying you are the president of Somalia and the gazetted officer is within his right saying that a photocopy of a document is a true copy of the original document. They are not in the business of verifying the authenticity of the original source, only in the non-tampering of source to destination. Gazetted officers unfortunately do not have the same level of credibility. A principal on the other hand is expected to have some credibility.

The Principal from whose school you have done class 12th from, will attest the 9-11 certificates/marksheets for the simple reason that you got admission in that school based on these very report cards. If there was any doubts about the autheticity of these documents, you would not have been admitted to class 12 at your current school.

In the absence of a Pricipal/Counsellor, Gazetted officers can attest. The reason being their they are authorised to this job.

“Gazetted Officer is a higher level ranked public servant. Authority for a gazetted officer to issue an official stamp comes from the President of India or governors of states or union territories. In India, “Gazette” is published on regular bases by The eGazette of India. It is an official central government or state government publication (also called “Gazette”) which publishes the appointment or promotions of certain government officials. An officer or public servant, who is appointed under the seal of the Governor of the concerned state or by the President of India at national level, requires being listed in the Indian Gazette or State Government Gazette to be considered a Gazetted Officer. If a person’s name is published in the Gazette, he/she is called Gazetted. Such officers, among other functions, have the power to verify the documents for academic, immigration and other purposes.”

Last year when my daughter applied through commonapp, all transcripts were uploaded by the school directly. We gave the scanned pdfs of these transcripts. I don’t recall sending any of these by mail. She only sent additional recommendation letters by snail mail. She applied to about 9 universities.
You can check my earlier posts for the list of colleges.

My school does not provide mid year report card, they just provide us with a report card annually which has all the marks of each and every exam happened the same year, but the problem is my school does not provide marksheet of any other exam in 12th standard that is in the end we just get final board passing certificate and marksheet. So what should my counsellor do on mid year report section? Sending final board marksheet is out if question as we would get it after the college admissions process is over in USA

Your school must be conducting some sort of pre-boards exam. You could send that report as Mid-year report.

Thanks for the reply. There is one more question do the letter of recommendations have to be written on official school letterhead?

Yess…if they are going in snail mail.

I am applying through Common App,so just a signature of recommender on the letter would be enough?

If you are not uploading it online but sending it by post, it should be on school letterhead.

@Alien515
I’m in exactly the same situation as you are in. I was a student at a CBSE school up till Grade 11 after which I switched to NIOS.

But there is one thing I don’t understand. Why did you choose to mail the documents? Couldn’t you just have your counsellor upload them as part of the Common App?

Aw man I don’t know if you’ll even see this but I hope someone who can guide me does. Thanks.
