Indiana U vs University of Illinois Urbana Champaign for Liberal Arts

I know that UIUC has better programs in the sciences but I've never heard it being to well accredited for its liberal arts programs? Same for Indiana University in Bloomington.

Basically I'm still deciding between the two. I'd be paying $20,000 by myself for 4 years at IU and my parents would pay the entire instate UIUC tuition.
Though I'm still more drawn to IU because of the beauty of the campus (Is that wrong?). I'm unsure if I want to go into a college with a lesser reputation.

Also, i'm wondering what a typical student would be like for either school. I know they're both big schools but I don't think I'd fit into the greek scene, which I know is a tad bigger at University of Illinois.
Just any opinoins on all of this, it all helps.

UIUC would compare more to Purdue in terms of academics and being stronger in science, engineering etc. IU is the more “liberal-artsy” school and although it also has a big Greek system there are many options for independents as well. I would also strongly encourage you to go on to the Fall 2009 course schedules for both schools and check out class sizes at the 200-400 level for your possible intended major, and compare.

Most of UIUC’s liberal arts majors are ranked within top 25. Its quite strong in regards of liberal arts also.

Thanks I also first saw IU and being more into the liberal arts, but maybe UIUC’s big eingineering programs kind of just over shadow the liberal arts college

LAS at UIUC is not of lesser reputation than IU. As a whole university, UIUC is better than IU pick any ranking you want. Within specific schools IU is better like the Kelley School or the music program. Oh and honestly with 30k students, the greek scene doesn’t put a dent in meeting ppl and finding good friends. None of my friends at UIUC are greek affiliated and they bar crawl harder than my friends in Chicago.

If anything I notice the Greek scene more at IU than at UIUC. Go to Roy’s…anytime… and it’s tucked in polo short sleeves and khaki shorts, the girls from EAT crowding out the far back bar near the wheel… yeah constant.

We are from Chicago and I like IU its a much better campus and the feeling is schools within a school.

Yeah I’m from Chicago too and I go to IU, I just don’t think there’s that much of a difference between the campuses. I’ve never been out and thought, “wow this campus makes this experience better” it’s all about the ppl I’m with, but that’s just me.

Thanks, I decided to go to UIUC. I figured they’re both big schools and meeting people and finding people with similar interests shouldn’t be too hard at either campus, the main difference was the 5,000 a year.
