You do a nice job with your analysis I agree. Kelley self-reports a 25% review request admit and 40% overall which includes the 100% auto-stats admit rate.
In prior years Kelley usually started to issue decisions in late November with the University accepting some in September without Kelley decision on its admits. Then a lot of waiting for the rest. Then rejection or wait list or accept in March.
Middle 50% I think the last stats I saw from Kelley was 2022 - 3.7/1300 SAT or 28 ACT, but I was also verbally told that that middle 50% was much higher last year especially on test score with a lot more applications and fewer spots and as others have posted a strong gender preference.
Kelley differs in some pretty big ways from the other business programs ranked high by US News, each of which affects the percent admitted and the yield. First, unlike the other top public schools, Indiana does not set aside a large portion of incoming class for in-state (that drives down OOS acceptance rates at other top publics). And it doesnât have the volume of high stat in-state kids that California and Texas have; there just arenât as many high school grads in Indiana. Second, it is not in a desired location, and it takes some work to pull kids from the coasts (thatâs why Carleton and Grinnell have higher acceptance rates than similar LACs on the East Coast). Third, Indiana overall as a university is not as highly ranked as other universities on the list. That overall university ânameâ and ranking means something to a lot of people.
The fact that it is a great business program AND has such a high admit rate makes it a bit of a unicorn, IMO. But, Iâm from the midwest and lots of people around here know the Kelley brand.
Another big factor for high acceptance rate is number of students at Kelly . There is no other business school who has 2000+ students per year. Providing excellent academic + job opportunity to so many student is a big achievement.
I agree - they take a lot more first year students than other programs. And I have a feeling quite a few do not make it to the end because of the rigor.
Thatâs such an interesting point! Has anyone ever seen numbers on (a) how many are accepted through the on-campus pathway, and/or (b) how many kids that start in Kelley (either direct admit as freshmen or through the on-campus pathway as sophomores) end up switching out?
It seems like the top business programs either weed you out on the way in (very high entrance requirements) or weed you out once you are there (tough classes).
Is my son placing himself at a disadvantage if he waits to receive his IU acceptance before submitting his âdirect admission review requestâ to Kelley?
Kelley is not EA, so Iâm not sure if anyone knows if itâs a disadvantage to apply before the deadline of 2/1. Is he taking another SAT and waiting on the results? I have no data but my but my gut feeling is to submit the review sooner than later if possible. My daughter submitted her review a few days agoâŠAll the best!
Hello, My child applied IU EA, indicating Kelley, and got email on 11/16 to create the portal account, so she did. But till this moment, she still couldnât log in, saying her username doesnât exist. Is this normal?
Easier question where does IU place you - IU places you into University Division Pre X based on whatever you put as your intended major if you are not admitted directly into a college. Which is essentially âundecided.â
Disadvantage to wait for Kelley? Not a disadvantage like it would harm you in chance for admission. Question is would something change in the next two months versus potential advantage of having submitted now during early action period (even though Kelley is not EA). I do not see downside of submission now, I can see advantage of waiting (like first semester grades). Depends on your situation.
