Hi, I am currently torn between attending IU as a Kelley Direct Admit or Ohio State (directly in Fisher). I am leaning towards IU because i visited on a Direct Admit Day and really liked everything about it (campus, teachers, programs, etc) and the ra-ra spirit. I have not visited Ohio State because i just dont think it is as reputable as IU and too many kids from my school go there, but I am still open to it. I am from NY, and recieved 10,000 from Indiana and 12,500 for Ohio State, so IU would be a couple thousand dollars more (not much of a big deal). Can anyone give me some detailed insight on all aspects of both schools, specifically Kelley and Fisher? I would like to make a decision soon. And as i said, i am leaning towards IU and i just want a little more confidence to put in my official deposit, or if i should consider Ohio State more. Thanks so much in advance!
If you are from New York and want to go back to NYC for a finance job, go to IU. They have a better finance department. OSU has a good B-school, but their strength is in operations management which is what many employers in central Ohio are looking for.
Are you sure all your merit aid has been awarded at IU? I just received notification at the end of last week about a Hutton Honors scholarship and an additional small scholarship, these in addition to the Dean’s Scholarship. I’m in A&S not Kelley but I do know that Kelley is renowned and the staff and faculty are amazing. I really don’t think you can find a more beautiful campus than IU but I have not visited OSU. @RyanSox99
@STEM2021 yeah i pretty sure that’s it, i recieved the official financial aid report and everything. Do you know how likely it is to recieve one of those Kelley undergrad scholarships that they say they give out (that dont require an application or anything)?
Sorry, I am not sure about the Kelley scholarships. However, it is not too late to apply for the IU foundation scholarships. That application closes on the 10th. Good luck! @RyanSox99
I am perhaps biased having graduated from IU-Bloomington though I never took a business school there. But I also lived in Bloomington for years and had neighbors who were business school faculty. IU has an excellent business school and its highly ranked - has been since I was there over 30 years ago and it has grown massively since then. I would say there is no comparison between the campus aesthetics at Ohio State (drab, office park brick, eclectic uninteresting) to that of IU (beautiful Indiana limestone fairly consistently throughout, beautiful landscaping, gorgeous in the fall and spring). Columbus is definitely a larger city but I thought the campus was in a dodgy area and IU is the town in Bloomington - adjacent to downtown and the largest employer by far.
The only bad thing I have to say about IU is the sad state of its basketball program after they drove Bob Knight out of town. For that, they got what they deserved - a basketball program about equal to their football program.
Are the classes in Kelley extremely hard? AKA, will i have trouble staying in kelley and keeping my grades up, or is it manageable?
What about the social aspect? and on a completely different note, do u recommend pledging for a frat? I just don’t want to join a crazy one, maybe AEPI, ZBT( i am jewish), or SAE. Could u/anyone explain how/when pledging works bc i really have no clue about any of it.
Again, thanks so much everyone, this is really helping me
I am a bit of an old man for answering contemporary social questions. When I was in school, we considered business a relatively easy major relative to STEM majors. I never joined a fraternity and had a great time there. The stereotype was that a disproportionate number of business majors were in fraternities. I would have found pledging a very annoying waste of time but to each his own. The frat houses are very nice and always had good parties that I envied buy rarely attended. You don’t need to know anything about pledging - if you are interested they will swallow you whole with the process.
You can expect to work at Kelley. It is not for slackers for sure. However, they want all their students to succeed and if the student seeks help out and goes to see their professors during office hours and takes advantage of all the help there is you won’t have a problem. Don’t miss a great opportunity by second guessing your ability to do well. But Kelley is for serious students. I know this because I have a relative who works at Kelley. @RyanSox99
