Indians, Greek Life

Hey everyone, I'm an Indian guy from California and I'm seriously considering Tulane. I go to a prep school with mostly white people so I'm comfortable, but a lot of my friends are Indian and I was wondering if TU has a good Indian population. Also, I would want to rush a frat so would being Indian hurt me? I don't think there would be racism or anything in this day and age but you never know, and I know how traditional frats could be. I think I would fit in at Tulane even though it lacks racial diversity (although i've heard that its geographically/personality-wise diverse) but I don't know about the fraternities. If anyone has any thoughts on this I would appreciate it. Thanks!

I’m also Indian, but I’m a girl.
When I visited during honors weekend, my host was an Iranian girl from Maryland, and I talked to her briefly about this. She basically said there’s a lot of people who are mixed race ethnically, because people literally come from all over, so the statistics aren’t really a great indicator. There’s a lot of diversity that way. I don’t really think there’s a lot of racism, people seemed pretty accepting. If you’re coming from a predominantly white school though, there will definitely be diversity…I know they have like Diwali shows and stuff.

Have you checked out the India Association (http://www.tulane.edu/~iatu/</a>)? I’ve never gone to any of their meetings or anything, but I see ads for their events in the LBC and around a lot. They seem really active.

yeah, definitely check out tulane’s indian association! they are super active, and if it tells you anything they throw a great party (nirvana) once a year that a lot of people, indian or not, attend. haha and i don’t think you will have any problems rushing a frat.

There’s plenty of indians here, possibly one of the greater minorities on campus. You will not feel ostracized; I have indian friends that rush, but a greater majority that aren’t interested. Still, the option isn’t closed.

I’m an Indian girl from the midwest, and I visited for Honors weekend a couple of weeks ago. I didn’t notice too many Indians on campus (which struck me as weird, because every other college visit has had a huge number of Indians) so I asked my friend who is a freshman at Tulane (she is also Indian) about it. She said that there are a good number of other desis around, and that it is a relatively tight-knit group, which is nice. I stayed at her dorm overnight, and her and a couple of her Indian friends were studying together. Random, but it might provide insight. As for rushing, I don’t think being Indian would be a problem at all.
