I’ll be attending UCSB in the fall, and right now I’m going for pre-med. But my other alternative was Advertising (which is what I am now leaning towards as my career), although UCSB doesn’t offer that major. So I learned about something called the Individual Major. Basically, I can create my own major, but I am also responsible for making up my own curriculum and finding professors to support me. It sounds pretty difficult to even obtain.

Should I just change my major to something related to Advertising such as Communications or Psychology? Or should I take a chance at the Individual major? Please don’t suggest that I attend a different university.

I have a friend attending UCSB currently who created his own major: "Professional Writing." I haven't spoken to him in awhile, but what it seemed to me is that as long as you express your enthusiasm for the subject, and gain the support of professors who have an interest in it, you should be fine. It shouldn't be incredibly hard, since all professors i've met here (save a select few) in my three years have been incredibly beneficial, helpful, and caring toward students.

It probably would be best to contact advisers from UCSB directly.

I tried e-mailing one of the Communications professors, but he just forwarded my message to an advisor. I also sent another message to the advisor, but she hasn't responded. I e-mailed both of them two weeks ago.

THANK YOU collegemom16!!! I've never even heard about MAT. Also the second site was an encouragement because at least it let me know that advertising could still be an option for me. THANKS!
