Hi everyone, I'm an admitted Penn 2016er but I've been classified as ineligible for financial aid. Despite this, my parents are unwilling to shell out the full cost of my education and as a Canadian, it seems incredibly difficult to get student loans to study outside of Canada (I will still try). Does anybody have any advice or a way out of this situation? Will I still be able to work at Penn without being offered financial aid (I understand most of the work-study programs are combined with financial aid offers)? What should I do?

My daughters fiance is a Canadian who attended a US law school. He received a loan just like everybody else, through a bank, in Canada.
If you had known that your parents won’t pay full tuition, why did you apply in the first place?
Is Penn need blind for foreign students?

Penn is only needblind for Americans, Mexicans, and Canadians.

@flyingace that really sucks. I mean, as cbreeze suggested, I think the only viable option would be to take student loans. But I can be wrong, since I’ve never taken a business course in my life.

I didn’t expect to be completely ineligible for financial aid, the simulators and calculators all had me receiving 5k to 10k so I still wanted to apply. Penn is need blind, but I don’t think this is a situation that would apply to, its more for people who’s families genuinely can’t afford the school. I’ll check out some student loans, most of them seem to be for Canadians studying IN Canada, but I’ll keep looking. As for the possibility of working on campus, any ideas?

Do reach out to Penn Student Financial Services. I’m sure they will be able to point you in the right direction to finance your Penn education.

Also, know that there is a monthly payment plan to help defer the cost of your Penn education. You can find more information about this on the SFS website. Please contact me if you’d like to know anything else!

Thanks maserrano, I’ll definitely send them an email and see if I can appeal the financial aid decision or something. Would you know anything about working on campus with a student visa? I know working off-campus is basically impossible…

I’m not sure if you even CAN appeal a financial aid decision. You can reapply next year?

Well I’m really hoping my family’s income won’t go down significantly this year so I doubt that I’ll get an aid package next year. Is there really no easy way out of this situation?

Yes, you absolutely can appeal a financial aid decision. It’s done all the time, and is often successful, especially when it’s a matter of matching a better package from a peer school. But even without that, it’s worth giving it a try.

Its just unusual, my family income is around 165k and apparently in my income bracket around 70% of students who apply receive aid, I don’t know why I didn’t qualify

^ You definitely should contact them and find out.

I’ll give them a call on Monday for sure. Do you know anything about job opportunities on campus? I think if I could just give any indication of helping with tuition it would make a tremendous difference to my parents. Penn doesn’t offer any kind of loan to students who don’t get financial aid does it…

And I thought getting in would be the hard part haha

I have never filed for financial aid but my daughter always able to find pretigious on campus opportunities in the last 4 years(she is not at Penn). Maybe it’s her talent.
