I'm a freshman planning on rushing, but know nothing about most of the frats. Could current students fill me in, maybe with one-line descriptions of the culture at each frat (sororities too, so I know which are the good ones to mix with)? Thanks guys

Well man, there's around 50 frats so it's important to narrow it down before you actually start rushing... after a lot of thought I was able to narrow it down to 5. I'm a freshmen going to rush, too.

Yeah, I can tell you about some of the frats and sororities, but there are really way too many to just list them all. Also keep in mind anything you hear will be biased. For example I'm in a fraternity, so that makes me biased. And even people who aren't will find attitudes or styles of certain fraternities to be very dissonant with themselves and thus think much more negatively of a frat. My advice to you is really just to go to the smokers and "night events" of the frats you've liked so far and get to know the brothers. I really hate that so many people basically don't know anything about any frats, and decide to learn it all during Rush. Rush is a show man, the brothers are as nice as possible, everything is much cleaner and smoother run. Everyone gets along better. Incredible ammounts of money is spent (Houses spend litterly in the 10's of thousands for just that one week). I met alot of brothers at different frats my 1st semester. I basically knew which frat I was going to be in before 2nd semester started, and they knew they wanted me as well.

What frat are you in?

Sigma Alpha Mu (Sammy). I also have friends in numerous other fraternities.

What do you think of... alpha sigma phi (rockledge), chi phi, dke, sig phi, sig ep?

Uh, rockledge is pretty cool. They've got my style of parties. I didn't like the location much though, a bit far out of the way for me. I went to some DKE stuff beginning of Freshman year. They have a really nice house and a couple of cool brothers. However those brothers were older, Seniors. I think they had some trouble then with rushing. At that time they had so little brothers that everyone was getting two rooms. Basically they were nice but too desperate, and their younger brothers seemed a bit lame. But this was 3 years ago, so I have no idea what kind of people they have now. I don't know enouch about the others you've mentioned to say anything worth while. I've gotten into some altercations with a Sig Ep guy I think on a bus once. That's about it heh.

My father was in rockledge at cornell, so if you have any HISTORY questions..... ;-)

mrnova/other "experts:" what should we look for when rushing? Personality/chemistry issues would seem paramount, but what are other, perhaps more superficial or subtle, things to look for during our week? Any other random tips?

how are Chi Psi and Pi Kappa Phi

well, we all know about chi psi's gorgeous house haha. I'm guessing it's not a good idea to pick a frat based on architecture though...

Far most important thing is chemistry. Everything else is really dwarfed. I guess the next most important thing would be the social life, if it's what you like and compatible with you. After that I guess living accomidations (if you plan on living in the house).

I know several people in Pi Kap. Good people, popular fraternity. Very involved in community service and such. It's fairly new, was refounded I think my freshman year or year before. My main issue with it was (at least 3 years ago) they didn't really have a pledge process. I think you were like automatically a brother, just had to learn some stuff about the frat on the way. Pledging for me was the best time I've ever had. I wish I could do it again. I enjoyed it so much I became a pledge master last year. I personally wouldn't want to join a fraternity and miss that experience.

what about sororities, what are the dif sororities like? I def want to join sorority probably Kappa Kappa Gamma, but we'll see. Also, are frat parties like much crazy than your typical high school party and like do you pregame first in someones room etc or is there plenty of stuff there etc...?

Again, quite a few sororities. List me the few you're interested and I can tell you some of the differences. I dunno, generally speaking frat parties are larger, more "opulent", and yeah a bit crazier. But I've seen and done some pretty crazy things during highschool. Don't forget, people are stupider, they don't know how to drink as well, etc. There are deffinitly MORE parties in college. Pregaming varies. There deffinitly is pregaming, and some people go out sober. Especially if you're a girl you shouldn't have problems getting alcohol at a frat party, unless you look like a potato sack. If you don't feel like waiting and you're a big drinker you may want to pregame. Also the alcohol at public open parties is generally...of lower quality so say the least. If you want some cocktails or something you'll have an easier time getting good stuff in your own rooms, unless you know the right people.
