Help! I need to decide between SUNY New Paltz School of Engineering and a more well known technical college. Does anyone out there attend the School of Engineering at New Paltz or have information that would be helpful to me to get more information about this specific program at New Paltz? Thanks!!

techiegirl, what is the better known college?

I have not heard of an engineering program at New Paltz. I looked it up on the web. They only have electrical and computer engineering…unusual. It is ABET accredited, which is a good thing. What appeals to you about the program at New Paltz?

The other college is RIT. I am interested in Computer Engineering. I like New Paltz because they have small classes, the professors were very willing to answer my questions quickly. I know that New Paltz is not known for engineering, but I like what I saw. The College of Engineering at New Paltz is very small.
The retention rate at RIT is below 60%. When I went to the RIT open house the only students that presented were really smart students. They all were in the BS/MS program and were honor students.

if i were you i’d focus on a more engineering focused school. new paltz is not known for its program. Schools nearby known for their programs are RIT, SUNY Buffalo, SUNY Binghamton, RPI and SUNY Albany has a program, and its suppose to be decent. I personally wouldn’t take engineering courses at a school that has a huge focus on liberal arts etc, but thats just me

The SUNY Albany program actually is run in conjunction with New Paltz for the engineering aspects!

I don’t know much about the engineering program but my son goes to New Paltz if you have any questions about the school in general.

Thank you LilyMoon. Could you ask your son if he happens to know anyone in the engineering program (very small program-computer and electrical engineering only)? I would like my daughter to be able to hear what students who were not students who presented at the Open House have to say (I’m also looking for the same from the other school in which she is interested since those students were clearly the top of the pack).

Sorry - I don’t think he knows any engineering students. He is a recent transfer from this past semester and hasn’t met that many people yet.
