We're going to be in the area on a Tuesday afternoon. There are no official tours that day, but we were thinking of just dropping by the Busch campus for a quick visit. Any particular suggestions as to where we might find some friendly students who would like to tell us what they love and hate about Rutgers? Busch Campus Center? My DS is interested in Mechanical Engineering.

You can stop at the visitor center first and pick up some brochures. The webpage says they are open M-F 8:30am-5pm. The parking lot right across the street is usually empty. They should have campus maps here.

After that you can go over to the Busch Campus Center. There are a few metered parking spaces in the lot across the street (that lot is usually packed). There are several places you can have lunch and maybe talk to some students.

You might also want to attempt driving between the 5 campuses for a quick overview, but I wouldn’t try it during rush hour 4-6:30pm. You can also try taking a bus from Busch to Livi to see what that’s like.

How likely is an Engineer to spend time on the other campuses while a student. Would their humanities classes or other electives likely be on another campus? Is it practical for a student to get around without a car?

The visitors center on Busch campus is probably a 5-10 minute walk from the campus center.

Their humanities classes can be held on other campuses while they can also be on Busch; it really depends on what course you’re taking.

I personally believe that if you are going to live on campus, it’s very impractical to go around with a car. There are something called buses, and they come quite frequently.

[busch campus map visitor center - Google Maps](<a href=“Google Maps”>Google Maps)

“A” is the Visitor’s Center. You can see Busch Campus Center up top. zoom in for building names. You can walk, but I would drive unless you plan on being there for hours. I think it’s more like a 10-15 min walk.

You can have a car on campus (~$200 per year) but you aren’t allowed to drive between campuses for class, so it’s not really useful unless you have a job off-campus. Everyone walks or takes the buses.

mathmomvt - The engineering campus is fairly self contained. He will be on that campus for all of his classes. I suppose there are some exceptions but that is not how they described it on tour and we did have and engineering student give us the overall campus tour on the bus (being up front we asked her a ton of questions). Freshman engineers are housed on Busch campus too. It is actually a nice set up for a large unversityand it gives it a smaller feel. FYI for anyone visiting- complete campus tour from vistors center is worth while to give an overview of Rutgers (it’s done primarily on the bus). Then take the engineering specific tour on the Busch campus. My son was very impressed with Rutgers and loved the set up — he applied to engineering and was accepted and it is a top contender for him.

If you’re not from the area, be sure to stop by the RU Hungry sandwich trucks on College Ave. and Hamilton St. My son didn’t end up applying to Rutgers…the size of the school just wasn’t a great fit for him…but left to his own devices I think he would have based on the sandwich alone!
