Hello! I'm interested in attending Florida State. I am currently a freshman at Northern Illinois University. I'd be the first to admit to you that I haven't taken my academic career as seriously as I should have. As a result, my grades from high school and my first college semester probably aren't up to Florida State level. I decided a few weeks ago that I was going to start over, move out of state, and finally apply myself towards my education and reaching a degree. I was leaning towards attending a university out west, either in California or Arizona. Then I went to the Orange Bowl this past week. While there I met some of your fantastic alumni and current students. I was made aware that weekend of the incredible traditions and history that is a major part of your university. I feel like FSU would be that place for me to start over and be motivated to pursue my academics while being surrounded by a university full of history and tradition.

My question is what do I have to do to be a student at the university? I was made aware that the Florida community colleges have an agreement with the public four-year universities to give priority to Associate's graduates. Around what GPA would you need with that degree to get admitted to FSU? Would it be worth transferring to Tallahassee Community College to get an AA degree? After this upcoming semester at NIU, I'll have almost all of my gen eds completed. Would it be worth it to even continue this semester at NIU?

FSU’s football traditions are unparalleled and sitting in Doak Campbell on a saturday night is a truly special moment. While I do not start the university until this summer, I have been a lifetime Nole and I can tell you that it is the premier football school in the nation. That being said, the school ranks nationally in many of it’s academic programs. I would recommend that you finish up your AA at TCC and possibly retake some courses that you may have not done too hot in. It seems to me that FSU likes to see people that are committed to improvement. I was accepted to the school with a 3.3 high school GPA, but I had friends with a 3.5 and similar test scores that were not. I think the reason I was accepted is that I have shown a continuous improvement. My freshman grades were awful, but I improved every year.

My advice is to improve your grades at TCC. Hope this helps.

FSU requires a minimum GPA of 3.0 on all attempted college coursework, and then a 3.0 at your most recent school. You could in theory have a 4.0 at one school, but not have a 3.0 GPA overall and not get in.

My current GPA after one semester is a 2.2 I took a few difficult classes and was actually expecting lower. My next semester, however, is filled with easy classes (all gen eds) and anything shy of a 3.8-4.0 this semester will be a disappointment to me. This semester will hopefully get my GPA back up to around a 3.0. That’s around what I had in HS also.

Also I play hockey. Problem with this is our facility is an hour away. I found myself struggling to have time to focus on academics. The season ends in three weeks (thankfully early in the semester). I know for a fact this affected my grades and since I wouldn’t return to campus until around 1 am, I was often spacing out during my 8AM and 9:30AM classes.
