Inner Cities: what is their place in admission?

^^ lol, I counted 43 :)

Ok so youre saying I should do something like : apply to yale , rutgers ,and like cc or someting. There are tons of great schools out there, and each have their own criteria so I will leave it up to them to determine if I am good match or not. I'm not rich and if for ex I got into an ivy and I couldn't afford it(which is not possible )I would take the spot at a good school with lower academics. Maybe you have perfect scores and have elite safeties or something but not everyone is like you. I don't understand why you make college applications such a personal thing.

And no matter how much passion anyone has for yale or harvard , they will still be likely to get rejected. So why set your heart on one school. Adcoms don't seem to care much so why should I. After all it's college not marriage.

Maybe that last sentence did not make any sense.

K, whatever. I don't have super high scores by any means. I applied to 4 reaches, 1 match, and a few safeties. I just don't think it's fair of you to take TOTAL advantage of your fee waivers and use them at 40+ schools. Oh well.

The reason I get so many also lies in the fact that I have a really crappy school. Only one third of the school is applying to 4 year colleges. And the ones that do only apply two like 2 max.

"xSteven is being ridiculous."

Not so ridiculous. xSteven's point has to do with how many applicants colleges admit, not with actual attendance. For each admittance cycle, each college has a fixed number of applicants it admits, so it's theoretically possible for suatkilic to get an admittance spot somewhere that might have gone to another applicant (who might then attend a "lower ranked" school). However, colleges recognize that students are applying to more and more colleges, so they adjust the number they admit upwards to compensate, knowing that yields drop as applications rise, so the practical effect is low, but theoretically still possible.

I counted so where in the neighborhood of 40 schools.

I think my issue is that the Op has really not done her due diligence in selecting schools.

Did you choose your schools on the basis of:

If this is the only school you are admitted to will you be happy to attend?
IS each and every school on the list a financially feasible option for your family?

If you are poor, you do realize that there really is no such thing as a free lunch. Have you considered the cost of applying to all of these schools?

Sending scores alone is going to be over $320 (8 free choices if she took the SAT twice with a fee waiver and $9.50 per school to send the scores)

For schools that use the CSS profile, it will cost $23 for the 1st school and $18 a pop for each additional school (~$360).

Stamps for sending out recommendations, transcripts, etc.
Most of these fees will not be covered by fee waivers.

So we are talking about spending over $800, not covered by fee waivers just to be in the game.

Op will find at some schools the decision will be made for her. Most of the FAFSA only schools do not meet 100% of demonstrated need. these will leave a gap which she and her family will have to fill in the best way they can.

I would not count on getting strong FA at the following schools as the cost may end up being a bit onerous for you as an OOS student.

SUNY- Binghamton, Buffalo, Stonybrook
Penn State

Mass College of Pharm and Health has a $38,250 sticker price and only meets ~45% of your demonstrated need (22% grant aid and 77% loans)

While your scores are admirable, they may not be high enough at some schools to get you a full ride (lehigh whose FA is on average 69% grants and 31% loans and work)

However, what is done is done and all the op can do is wait and see how the process plays itself out.

sybbie719 was by far the most informative.

However I would like to add something. I have a tendency to fit in at almost any school. I have changed schools many times due to my parents moving. I was happy at every one of them. I went to private schools, public schools, charter schools, predominantly a. american schools. Only two different schools in high school though. I will be going to college for premed and things like parties wont really be an option for me. I am also muslim so I can not drink so theres another reason. Of course I will have lots of friends, but usually I'm not that picky at anything.
But I am sure that I would like to go to school that are intelligent and will inspire me to do better instead of holding me back like they did in high school.
I also know about the lehigh financial situation and I got an 11,000 scholarship from MCPHS so that makes it a little easier.
And regarding the collegeboard fees, that's why I worked 25 hours a week for the last two months.

And for binghamton, I know a lot of people from nj that got in with lower scores and gpa, although they are not everything for a state school I should be ok.
i already got into PENN STATE - actually my first acceptance
Stonybrook- IDK about that but the only reason I applied was because my history teacher who gave me a rec graduated from there and kept on nagging me about applying.

OH CRAP double post

But where is the other 27K coming from.

With schools like the SUNYs (which are ~20K) and Penn State (which is ~38k for oos students), it is not solely about getting admitted.

It is about being able to make the $$ work so that it is a feasible option for your family. The aid that you receive outside of Federal aid (pell if eligible and loans) may not be enough to cover the COA.

yet you applied to Penn State. LAWL.

bottom line, you did not use due discretion in the college selection process.

40+ schools? what you did was ridiculous....

what about this. maybe ill get into the lac that provide 100 percent aid. if not, there is always montclair which i got a full ride to and rutgers . rutgers i should get 10000 . thats enough for the tuition.almost.and i also got a full ride at fdu

If i do get into one of the elites I am going to put a link to this post and recommend everyone with my situation to do what I did.
If not oh well, villanova is pretty good or rutgers is always an option. And i think Villanova has the same competitive as some of these schools so hopefully there will be a fat envelope sticking out inside from a bunch of small ones when april comes around.
good point about penn state though.

Keep us posted. I would love to hear how this all works out for you and I feel bad that people are giving you a hard time. It is clear you did not have a lot of experienced help and support in the college application process. In a suburban HS with a lot of college-bound kids, the guidance counselor's office would have worked with you and your parents to help you trim down your list, but don't worry about that now - what is done is done. I can see that you worked hard on your applications and I wish you the best of luck.

idk im sry to OP but 43 colleges is rediculous, i truly doubt one can be passionate and dying for them all. U will get into most of them probably but u cud cut the list in half and be fine. 5 reaches, 5 matches, 5 safeties
and ud prolly get into 10 of them if not more, i just think its unfair to some kids who probly wanna go the school more than u do and its ranked lowly in ur list of 43 applied to colleges. I mean u gotta try to understand it somewhat, cause if u get into the best on that list that u like the most, then u just effed over one kid at 42 other universities (hypothetically). Idk that my input. I do sympathize for you due to ur education up bringing i really do, but its not like ur still not qualified you know. gah

I just think you had a great chance of getting a full fare at a great school, and instead of applying to 10 of those and maybe 2 safeties, you applied to a ton where you'll get accepted but then be forced to obtain a loan to go to them. I really hope Vassar or a like school takes you.

obviously im not dying for them all. but here is the reason why i applied to some of these schools
Yale-
Brown-
Dartmouth
Cornell
Upenn
Who wouldn't want to attend any of these schools?
And I believe they all have 100 percent financial assistance. In that case i would go for free.
It would also make my principal whom I hate because he belittled me in front of the whole class saying I could never get into an IVY when I couldn't solve a math problem partly because I was nervous because he was in the room.

Amherst
Colgate
Vassar
Bentley
Bucknell
Wellesley
Haverford
Honestly I think I would fit in at these schools better, considering I like small schools.

SUNY Binghamton--cheap OSS tuition
Buffalo-- Med program again, cheap OSS tuition
Stony Brook-Free application,
Rutgers-- My safety
Montclair--Applied for the guaranteed med program with UMDNJ
Monmouth-- Guaranteed med program with drexel med
Penn State--
Michigan--
UVa-- 100 percent financial aid ,
TCNJ- Good education, cheap price, close to home

JHopkins-- Good school, great academics but I heard its crazy competition even if i got in IDK
Emory--Good fin aid
Rice-- Good fin aid
Northwestern--
Duke-- Something tells me I would fit in terms of student body
Lehigh--I think it was a mistake, Idk what I was expecting for fin aid
Rosemont-- Med program
Robert Morris -Med program
Ursinus-Med Program
Drexel-Med program
The rest
The lowere ranked schools like Seton Hall and Njit were a definite waste of time, at least not worth sending the sat scores.

But what is done is done and I will probably select the cheapest and the best college I get into. If I have to choose between elites I will definitely be making overnight visits.

Sounds like a plan. I guess when you lay it out like that it makes sense. I think you'll get in at Wellesley...I hope your essay was great. And, I think you need to give your guidance counselor a huge gift to thank her for sending out transcripts and teacher recs to all these places.

Me and two friends are throwing him a small party in school

Please update this thread as you hear results...I'm really rooting for you!

I got into Wesleyan ED guys. 100 percent need met with grants :) The hard work payed off
