I noticed on the Accepted Students thread that there are none going to be attending Catholic for MT. I have read the Catholic threads and it seems like a good program, any insights? I know its a BM degree is this the only reason why?
I would not recommend using this year’s Accepted Students thread as any kind of an indicator of a particular program’s strength or weakness, especially for a specific student (yours) and especially for one particular year. Lack of posts for any particular school for a specific year does really mean much of anything. The MT forum here does not offer a comprehensive view of the application process, only a small snapshot from a small percentage of participants. If you look back across several years you may notice that some schools draw less attention than others, and perhaps that might offer some insight into its popularity, taking into consideration all the potential forms of bias that may exist among CC posters. However, that information, even if it correctly estimates overall popularity, is probably, ultimately, of somewhat limited usefulness as well. Catholic may offer just what your student (or any student, for that matter) is looking for, even if it is not among the most popular schools mentioned in posts here.
The fact that it is a BM MT is not a reason for lack of posts - Baldwin-Wallace, Oklahoma City, and several other programs that are very popular here are BM MTs.
I went to visit Catholic U with my D and met some dept people and had my D take a voice lesson with one of the teachers. We also met and had lunch with several students who are in MT. We liked what we saw and heard about the program. The voice instructor was great and had her doctorate in voice. The kids loved what they were learning and doing. They mentioned that there is outside theater opportunities especially in the summer. The theater space is nice. It seemed like a close knit supportive group. My D went thinking she would not like it but she did. I would recommend you visit.
D has a friend at Catholic who has had some amazing MT opportunities including working with Stephen Schwartz on a new musical! Seems like a great program from what I have seen.
