"Intellectual" Hidden Gem Schools

Right now, I'm definitely tranferring for the spring term. I'm planning on applying to Oberlin, Vassar, possibly Bard and Sarah Lawrence. It seems like you can't transfer to Macalester and Hampshire for the spring term, so those are out.

Are there any schools you guys could recommend? Preferably in the eastern half of the U.S. Thanks.

wesleyan fits the bill

I love Wesleyan... I don't think I can get in, unfortunately. I'm looking for schools that aren't well known, but still fit the bill in terms of what I want.

Smith, maybe?

Or maybe Mount Holyoke.

I also endorse Mt. Holyoke, it's a true gem in the woman-college. But I think Reed is also an amazing school, and if intense academics is your cup of tea, then Reed is a great cup of Chai.

^^^Although it's all the way on the west coast.

Take a look at Beloit, Kalamazoo, Earlham, Wooster, Bennington, and Hampshire as "safer" admissions options. All are amongst the top producers of PhDs per capita, and have a funky, offbeat intellectual feel. Grinnell would also be great, if you are willing to go a little further west.

I wouldn't say that there's that much of a difference, distance wise, between Beloit and Grinnell...

University of Maryland-Baltimore County (UMBC)

beloit and grinnel are still several hours apart. enough to mke a bit of a difference, but probably not much.
I'll agree with all of Lesser Perfesser suggestions.

Lawrence U
The Evergreen State College
New College
Knox
Goucher

to name a few more...

My daughter applied to all the schools you mentioned and ended up at Bennington. Give it a look and think carefully about what each school has to offer you.

Look for the hidden gems amongst schools that are undergrad only, or nearly so.

Since when is Mount Holyoke "a hidden gem?" Anyone with a lick of sense is aware of its longstanding fine reputation.

How about Kenyon?

Thanks for the suggestions, guys. I'll take a look at those schools. By the way, I'm a male, so Smith and Mount Holyoke are out the question. Although... my sister constantly tells me that I'm sensitive like a woman.

The Evergreen State College?
dude that is a hippie school

Yeah well, our guidance office refers to U of Chicago as a hidden gem--- all depends on your perspective!!
