Intellectualism vs. Career Preparation, Learning for the sake of learning

Simply put, are the mindsets of students at BU more intellectual or completely career-minded? Is there such a thing as intellectualism at BU?

What I fear the most is being in a place where political apathy runs rampant and the wish to inquire about things other than the deadline of hw and such is non-existent.

Please don’t take my question as an insult to the population of BU or their intelligence level. I just want to know about how people view academia.

there are some really smart people at BU. i would probably say that half are just going through the motions at school and the other half actually cares about getting into a stimulating conversation about whatever it is. this is just from my experience though. people in SMG almost never talk about the principles of business or theories of management and are generally career oriented. but my roommates(one from cas and the other from cfa) were deep and talked about paradoxes and the like. some classes can get into some really heated discussions too! i really hope i understood your question hahha just trying to help!

There will probably be more and more of an intellectual atmosphere at BU in the years to come because of the sharp incline in competitive applicants. More people are becoming more qualified, and the top schools (Ivy League, etc) can only have so many people.

Although I’ve seen very little of the BU population, I would think that Alectricity’s estimation is about accurate: 50/50.

thanks guys! that answered my question!

and to be honest i think you’ll find that’s the case at almost every school. even the ivies have their fair share of people who are just there for the degree.
