Intended Major

How signficant of a role does one's intended major play in the admissions process? Mine is kind of obscure, and I am definitly planning to contact a professer about the subject. Anyone with specific knowledge on the matter please respond! I'm trying to avoid speculation though..

Thanks so much!

If you are planning on majoring in engineering that may make a difference, as Swarthmore’s engineering program is relatively small, given the overall college size. It is more likely that someone will change majors from engineering to something else than it is for someone to change from something else into engineering, so the admissions office always keeps in mind the need to have enough potential engineers to keep the department going. But if your potential major is not engineering I think it will make little or no difference. What might make more of a difference, if you have an unusual major in mind, is a well thought out story of why you want to major in whatever-it-is.
