My daughter did not get into the musical theatre program at OU and did not audition for the Voice program. Does anyone know if there are other opportunities for students to continue their love of music as extracurricular activities at OU? Choirs, acapella groups, musicals and theatre for non-majors? Do these programs allow students to audition into them as sophomores? She plans on studying chemical engineering, so my wife and I think maybe it was for the best that she was not accepted into these competitive programs, but would still like her to be able to stay involved.
@jerzmaster My freshman D once said one of her contact in her program was doing some Music related course though Music is not his major or minor. But since he is interested in Music, he did some course last semester.
Thanks @GoldenRock . I looked through the catalog and now see a large selection of music courses for non-majors. This is good for my D since it allows her to take piano, voice, choir as a non-major.
We have a family friend that doubled in Meteorology and Music at OU. That lasted the first 2 years, but got to be too much.
D1 is at another college but really loved music. Best thing she did was audition for one of their choir groups. It has helped her find her place on campus and eases her stress. Oddly enough, performance of art does not count toward their Fine Art requirement.
@Torveaux Thanks! My D likes the idea of auditioning for the choir. I like that it’s not the same commitment as doing a music major. Since she is majoring in engineering, I think it would be too much for her also. I also told her that acappella groups would be a fun stress relief for singers. I’m hoping that there are some groups available to join.
Just curious @jerzmaster, My D has not heard from OU MT yet, did they already give out some decisions? Best Wishes.
My D started with a minor in music but ended up dropping the minor but is still taking lessons on her instrument and very active in the music program.
@CL2021KEN My D was not part of the on campus audition…did not make it past the video submission and application for call backs. Good luck, I plan on seeing musicals when I visit campus
Just to follow up on this discussion with information I got from our campus visit and research:
- OU has multiple choirs at the school. Students need to audition and have availability for the scheduled practice times.
- There are student acapella groups. There is one that has YouTube videos posted (Crimson Chords, formerly Redliners) Also, need to audition for these groups. For student groups, it sounds easy enough to start your own acapella group on campus.....would just need to get enough interested students together.
- Students interested in voice, theater, dance, etc. can take some classes as non-majors. Most are introductory or individual instruction.
We talked to Kim Josephson in the music department and he was awesome! He got my daughter super excited about opera. Since I am soon to be a Sooner dad myself, I’ll post more information as I get it for future Sooners.
