Interesting Course Schedules

DianeR: Was the transition from homeschooling to college hard on your daughter?

[/quote]

No, not really. She had taken courses at Brown for two summers during high school and so was familiar with the campus, the library, studying for more high pressure tests (as compared to ones at home), etc. We used college texts for everything except Latin & Greek (the texts really didn't have a level) and math prior to calculus, so the academic transition wasn't very hard. We also listened to a lot of college-level Teaching Company courses, so she had practice listening to lectures and taking notes. She's also done a number of research papers, so that was nothing new.

The only real problem she found was discovering that when a professor announces particular books might be useful for researching topics for papers, students rush over to the library and check them out, even if they don't intend to start work on their papers right away. So she had to do some asking around to find out who had certain books and arrange for access. Fortunately, that all got worked out. This semester she went right to the library once she had a topic in mind!

Socially, it hasn't been a problem. Contrary to stereotype, homeschoolers do usually have outside activities, socialize with each other and regularly-schooled friends, etc. I don't think she had any more of an adjustment than did my son, who had attended a private school. My daughter fences and so has a ready-made peer group with the team (someone from her home club is also a freshman on the team). There is this little clutch of Egyptology concentrators who hang out together. And she is the type who seems to be able to make friends with most in her classes, her dorm, etc.

I've talked to a number of other homeschooling parents and it seems like my daughter's easy transition is typical. Periodically, some student newspaper or alumni magazine at a college will come out with a "oh look, there are these homeschoolers on campus" article, which gets passed around homeschooling boards. None that I've seen have mentioned an adjustment problem.

OK Multivariable Calc as a sophomore..And the smartest kids in our school take BC Calc as junior. Public schools are sooo inferior.

Do you guys think it would be good for me to replace some of those AP courses with classes like microbiology and pathophysiology, even though they are regular level? My only worry is that it will hurt my GPA, (I am currently raniked 2/1038, meaning that val has all 97's, 98's and 99's in his/her classes). Is this good enough a schedule to get into Harvard (combined with ECs and everything else?) Thanks for your opinions.

cooljoe- I believe that colleges look at the GPA that appears on your transcript. However, they consider rank more than GPA, since some schools are more competitive than others, and some offer less advanced courses than others.

I go to a regular public school.

Is it better to take a course that appeals to you, even though it's regular, or a GPA-boosting AP course?

uh...i feel LIKE AN IDIOT WITH NO STATS...omg how are u guys taking like 3 APs freshie year? i am too depressed to post my schedule now and will be likely committing suicide..lol

Wow, I go to a public magnet school that is considered one of the best in the country and we offer no interesting classes like that. Even ya'll who said you don't take interesting classes do. We haev set curriculums of what we have to take... but we just can take AP instead.
No APs for fresh, we take Magnet/Advanced course instead. And then the school system decide to be weird and have freshman take 7 classes and everyone else take 6 and they changed that this year so now everyone takes seven.
