Interesting (though slightly disheartening) revelation from Bates admissions dean

This happened a while back, but it may prove to be vital info for some of you…

At a November 12th Open House information session admissions dean Wylie Mitchell was talking to myself and other prospective students and parents about deferrals. He raised a question to the students and parents, asking whether or not deferral should be removed as an ED option to discourage applicants from capitalizing on a small statistical advantage that came with Early Decision at Bates.

I told him that more information would be helpful, and I asked what the rate of deferred students accepted in RD was.
He told me it was only around 2 PERCENT.

I was quite surprised, but he was telling the truth. Just a piece of info people might want to know.

(PS I’m coming back to college from break and waiting to see if I’ve been accepted to the class of 2008 as a transfer or not. I’ll keep everyone updated)
