Internal transfer Computer Science

So I was just denied from the Computer Science school with a 3.86 GPA. They claimed they ran out of room......

Did anyone else have this problem? I just transferred in and was only able to complete 7 hours last semester. However, I got a 3.86 this semester and had a 4.0(after 40 hours) from my last school.

I'm pretty pissed right now and highly confused!

I’m in the same boat. If you go on the internal transfer website it says the process is competitive. It was not like this before. The only requirements used to be at least a 2.5 GPA, no more than 60 in residence hours, and no more than four semesters at UT. This is what we were constantly told by advisors, the CS department, the website, the application, etc. The official word was as long as we met the requirements we would get into the CS program after the spring semester end. However this obviously did not happen and it wasn’t because of some miscommunication. The department just randomly decided to change their minds, most likely because of the lacking resources of the department. This is a big issue going on at the moment and currently we are waiting for a response. Some people did get accepted but it seems it was random as some people were denied with high GPAs and vice versa.

Don’t worry, you aren’t the only one in this situation. If you go on the Computer Science Facebook group a lot of prospective transfer students are also in the same situation. As of now it looks like we got screwed over but I believe the dean of Natural Sciences is sending out an email later today explaining the situation and the steps we are to take (which is likely just reapply and hope we get in next semester). The process is now completely different next semester and is actually competitive.

I’ve been told this also. I don’t have an option though, it’s either I get accepted now or I leave the university. They put me in a very hard spot with my veteran’s benefits.

I am also very annoyed, I was told the very same things by advisers and they completely changed them in the last minute.

I can’t seem to join the FB page either.

Yep. They randomly changed the website the day after summer/fall applications were due so to our knowledge we should be accepted under the old requirements. But nope. The CS department screwed us all over. It pisses me off that they reverse their process at the very last minute. I could have applied last semester but I didn’t because I wanted to take this semester thinking it over but it looks like I screwed myself over now.

I’m a prospective transfer and was recently denied to my first choice computer science major with a 3.8 GPA but got accepted for my second choice ( economics.) Is it really going to be that difficult to transfer internally into Computer Science? I thought it would be, but now i’m worried after reading this thread.

Yep. The department doesn’t have enough professors and too much prospective students. There simply isn’t enough room in the department now and unfortunately internal transfers are the lowest priority.

OP: Don’t you need a minimum of 24 hours before you can be considered for admissions into CNS? how did you even apply with only 7 UT hours

No, they clarified a couple of months ago that all I needed was a 2.5 GPA.
I’m already in CNS(computational biology), I was advised that I could transfer to CS at any time.

You are right. It doesn’t matter if you are CNS or not. As long as you had a 2.5, no more than 60 hours in residence, and no more than four long semesters at UT you were good. The department just decided to ■■■■ everybody over and randomly deny most internal transfers. It really pisses me off so much because I could have applied last semester but didn’t because I wanted more time to think on the decision to double major. Looks like I ■■■■■■ myself over big time. It really is a big pile of ■■■■■■■■. Their reasoning was that they were lacking the necessarily resources to accommodate all the students who wanted to get into the program as well as the new freshman and any current students. Upper division classes are notoriously hard to get into due to the sheer number of CS students and according to them accepting all internal transfers would have made everything worse. They really should have clarified all this BEFORE the start of the application but nope. The department doesn’t seem to care. To a lot of us this really screws over our plans and I do not have high hopes for my future now.

There has been some more information as to the decision process. It has to do with the four year graduation rate… Students who either did not have a major or were not already on track to graduate in time had priority over those who would have had to take an extra semester or two (thus lowering the four year graduation statistic). They wanted to accommodate those did not have a major and needed one in order to graduate within four years.

So yeah. Basically if you were already on track to graduate in four years they shafted you. Which is pretty stupid since I’m sure most of us knew we were going to have to spend an extra semester but thought it was worth it because of the benefits of the CS degree. Looks like they ended up making the decision for us.

It’s over guys. I was just told there isn’t going to be any exceptions.
Time to change majors and find a new university!

none of this makes any sense, didn’t the CS department just get a new building of their own? you’d think this could have helped the situation but apparently not

The problem is that they have very little money for hiring new professors and thus getting more classes. The money they got was specifically for furniture and building the new building.

I’m just really mad that they filled us with empty promises. Seriously, what I’m I supposed to do?

I dk, and they don’t care either…

@jpgarcia6‌ couldnt you major in like math and minor in CS and get a similar job?

@commandbutton For what I wanted a double major in Computer Science and Film would have been best. Looks like I’ll have to stick with just a minor which isn’t nearly the same thing.

@jpgarcia6‌ film and CS major interesting lol those are pretty different
