So basically I got capped at UT Austin and i am having to attend UTSA for a year before i transfer. I just got done with UTSA orientation, scheduling my classes, and learning about the program. I have some questions for my future, most of which do not pertain to the CAP program.
I would also like to apologize if this post is all over the place
To start off i would like to enter the UT Austin school of natural sciences for Computer Science, a very competitive school and major. At UTSA i am not taking any Computer Science classes, just core classes for any major. I am wondering if this will affect me being able to get into the CS Major? Basically , i am taking easy classes at UTSA, which will allow me to transfer with a 4.0 GPA (easy) and i am planning on using my free time to build up EC’s with Computer Science, by joining clubs, working on projects, and applying to a lot of internships. So with a 4.0 gpa and these EC’s will i make it into the CS department? Obviously you don’t know for sure but based on your experience i would like a guess. Will the 4.0 and EC’s make up for the fact that i took easy classes which have nothing to do with CS? I read that UT Austin makes GPA a big deal, will they even care about the classes or just the GPA?
You shouldn’t just assume you’ll have a 4.0 if you’re full time. UT uses a +/- system on a 4.0 scale, so basically a 93 gets you 3.67 grade points per hours and a 98 (A+), gets you only 4.0. If you’re taking 14-17 hours, keeping all of your grades above a 94 might be a lot more difficult than you think. If you weren’t an auto admit I don’t see why you would be so confident. College is harder for most people.
I feel like it will be easier due to the fact that i am not going to school for 8 hours, and playing sports. It is true i was not an auto admit, but i was in the top 10%. I am not all that confident but you must understand, i took AP Calculus my senior year…i will be taking college algebra next year. I believe i can easily make above a 94 - 98. It will be hard to uphold it that high but i will do my best and i dont see it being overly difficult. I have looked up a lot of my teachers online to find promising results from people who got A’s. Overall i will devote more time to my grades than i did in highschool. I will carefully go over each assignment and study all material for each test. Thank you very much for your chance. Do you believe that if i pull off a 4.0 i can get into the college i want? other wise i will get my associates at UT and transfer somewhere else for CS
You really can’t give someone a prediction for something that hasn’t happened yet. Getting into a major like CS for UT as a transfer student is difficult and relies on a variety of factors. All I can reasonably tell you is that you should complete your calculus credits before trying to transfer as that will make you more competitive. Yes, obviously having a 4.0 will make you an attractive applicant, but it won’t necessarily guarantee your admission to the CS department. Also you can’t earn an associates from a 4 year institution. You should do some more research on the CNS website.
It will be an internal transfer because i will automatically gain acceptance as apart of the “Coordinated Admissions Program” i am in. I guess i meant i am taking all the classes required for all majors at UT Austin. Such as a history class, english, etc. I will be doing Calculus there next year wether i am in the major or not. I understand i can’t get a prediction but heres what happened at my scheduling meeting for my classes with my advisor. The girl next to me took calculus, chem, and bio classes, a very “hard” course i suppose. Personally i don’t believe any class at The university of Texas at San Antonio is hard, While i am taking college algebra, history, and other easy classes. Will her 3.2 - 3.5 be more attractive than my 4.0? Obviously to us hers is more impressive but i am wondering about to admissions? (I also know that this is theoretical and i could end up making a 2.5 and she could make a 4.0)
Yes I’m aware you’ll gain admissions to UT as long as you have a 3.2, however you won’t necessarily get into the major that you want. This is where strength of schedule is important for a major like CS. They most likely aren’t going to accept you into the CS department if you don’t take calculus before you apply. There would just be too many unknowns. That would just be a guess based on the information on their website, but a pretty fair one I would assume. Also, there is absolutely no way for you to know whether UTSA classes are easy or hard, you haven’t even taken a college course yet so you should seriously just hold off on making threads like this, at least until you’re done with your first semester.
