international affairs/pre med major?

i'm currently a freshman at gw majoring in international affairs.. i have been thinking about pre med but haven't taken any sci classes yet or anything..just getting general requirements done. is it possible to do international affairs/pre med here? i know pre med isnt a major..but is too difficult to combine elliott requirements with what i'd need for med school? also..is this too unusual of a combination and too strange of a major for med school? very confused about this

thanks for any advice you may have

My comments/advice.

This is “doable”. Speaking from experience - med schools do not “require” you to major in any specific field. However, there are certain “science” classes that are required and Calculus is a plus.

GW has advisors - both in ESIA (yours) and Columbian College which can advise you of the details and the logisitcs of accomplishing this - use them, that’s what your paying for. GW does have advisors for “Pre-Med”. You would be assigned a second advisor in addition to your ESIA advisor. This is importnat since you will need a letter from the GW Pre-Med committee for your Med School App - this letter and the committee’s recommendation level is VERY important.

It will be easier if you have alot of AP credit to work with. You don’t have to “double major” in a science field, but you better get very good grades in all your science classes you take. Below is an example - but each med school will vary slightly in thier course requirements.

[Courses to Take Before Applying to Medical School](Courses Recommended for Medical School Applicants)

Make an appointment with your ESIA’s advisor - they are very good and will hook you up!

Best of luck - it’s an arduous process but worth it in the long run.
