I'm strongly looking to George Washington, because I'm very interested in Political Science and International Relations. If I wanted to pursue a career the field of diplomacy, would it be smarter to major in Political Science, International Relations, or do a double major? Also, I've heard that George Washington has a great International Relations Program and Political Science program, for anyone in either one do you have any testimonials about them?

johnc710: I would not recommend doing a double-major. If you are interested more in the way in which political institutions work, then go for Political Science. If you’re more interested in learning about other nations and international politics, then pick International Relations.

just so you know.majoring in intl affairs requires you to take TONS of poly sci classes…and the same goes for the other way around, a poly sci major will be required to take a few classes in the field of intl relations…to me, it seems pretty stupid to do a double major in those 2 subjects…double majors usually occur in subjects that are not so closely related…like intl affairs and economics or something like that…i highly advise to simply pick one or the other

I’ll be attending GW in the fall with an International Affairs major at Elliott. Before I realized how interconnected the two areas you mentioned (Political Science & IA) were, I really wanted to double major. But I ultimately decided that it wasn’t the best choice. I am expecting a lot of poli-sci classes down my alley, as Pat says. Just pick the one that fits your career goals the best and you’ll have the other option along with you as well.

Yeah thanks guys, i’ve heard that double majors are incredibly tough so i wasn’t really thinking that i would do a double major just wanted to see if it was as tough as people said. I always thought i wanted to be a history major, but i realized I’m more into diplomacy. Yeah international relations seems like the way to go, especially because gwu is so well known for their program, and they intertwine poly-sci courses into the program.

im not saying double majors are incredibly tough…im saying double majoring in intl affairs and poli-sci makes no sense…many people at gw double major so its not like its impossible…of course a double major is more difficult than if u just have 1 major…but by no means is it “incredibly difficult”…id reccomend double majoring in subjects not soo closely related

Yeah i get it thanks for the input, it makes sense that an International relations major would encompass some political science courses or vice versa. Considering as of right now im pretty sure that this is my interest, I think i’d stick with an International relations major. Also lets say i started at Elliot, and then wanted to transfer to a History major in Columbian, is that difficult?

transferring between schools is more common than u would think and transfering from elliott to to columbian would be very possible, especially after freshmen year…since most of the general required classes are the same
