Hello every one, I’m Alice - a 8th grade Vietnamese student going to apply for 10th grade I’m preparing
Our school year starts in August and ends in June, so if the deadline is in January, I haven’t finished my school year yet (even the first semester), so I won’t be able to send my GPA of the 9th year. What should I do?
And can I use my own teacher recommendation form, the studying programs are different (and my teachers can’t write in English)?
By the way, I am the 1st student in our class, I’ve won the 1st prize in the Internet Olympic English in my country for 5 years, especially the Golden medal in my 5th grade, I can play the piano too (just a little, I taught myself).I think I’m good enough to apply. But I only have the KET certificate (97/100), no TOEFL, is it ok to learn by myself? And the SSAT essay is such a difficulty, can anyone of you help correct my essays ( through email, etc,…)? Thanks first!
Finally, can you introduce me to your Vietnamese friends? I think I need their help.
Thank you so much!
I would contact the schools you are interested in applying to this summer (right now they are focused on new students for the fall) and talk to them. Most will have an admissions officer (AO) who works with international students. They might be able to connect you with other Vietnamese families. Check each school’s websites for requirements - I think most if not all require the TOEFL and SSAT. I don’t know if your parents write in English but most schools have questions for the parents too. Good luck with the process.
Thanks @MA2012 so much
If you have only been learning English by yourself, you should consider whether you need to be looking for schools that specifically have ESL (English as a Second Language) programs. The KET certificate is only designed to test for basic English skills, so it really doesn’t say much of anything about whether your English is strong enough to be able to take high school level classes taught solely in English. For that, you’ll need to take the TOEFL. Your score on that should help you figure out if you need a school with an ESL program or not. Most of the schools that are routinely discussed on this forum do not have ESL programs, as they expect their students to be able to read and write fluently in English before arriving on campus. If you look at the website boardingschoolreview.com, I think you can use the advanced search feature to find schools with ESL programs.
As for your question about your transcript, schools in the US work the same way (an Aug/Sept. to June school year). So when you submit your application in January of your 9th grade year, it would contain your current school transcript, which presumably will have your 8th grade school records and any grades you’ve received so far in 9th grade (such as first semester grades).
Thanks, I’m going to write an email to the schools, but i’m wondering if that would affect my future application process .
