International Honors Program

Can anyone help me out with some information about the IHP Study Abroad program? I've researched it, but they don't have any information on their website about the FALL 2010 or Spring 2011 programs. Has anyone studied abroad with IHP? If so, tell me what you liked and disliked about it. I am seriously considering studying abroad with IHP for the Health & Community program.

DoctorU – You won’t find many folks here on CC that know about IHP. I did a search 1 1/2 + years ago when D was getting ready to leave on the “Health & Community” program for spring 2009, and found one other parent whose D had done the “Cities in the 21st Century” program several years ago. That said, I can tell you that D had a life-changing experience with IHP. Although the program sounded great, as the time to leave approached, she became increasingly nervous about the homestays, being on the other side of the world, etc. – and she’s very outgoing and independent, with a fair amount of foreign travel under her belt. Within a couple of days, though, she had bonded with the others in the group and all was well. As parents we found IHP to be well organized and felt the program was well run, safe, etc. She had the most amazing homestay experiences, especially in India.

Is IHP still doing 2 Health & Community tracks? D did the “India, China, & So. Africa” one. Forget which countries the other one went to. There were country coordinators for each place they went to, and professors that traveled with them, as well as an IHP TA. OTOH, the were not coddled, and had to figure out a lot of stuff on their own – like how to take/deal with the auto rickshaws in India. She was able to send emails on a regular basis and we spoke via Skype fairly frequently.

As a result of her IHP experience, D has decided to pursue a Master’s in Public Health and will be starting at Yale this fall.

Hope this helps – good luck!

Thanks, its good to hear about the positive experience it had for her. From what I have read online, it seems to have a high reputation which makes me very excited as I will probably do this next spring. Hope she succeeds at Yale, thats such a great school!
