Hi, I was wondering how much of a chance I'd have to receive a merit based scholarship at certain quasi safetyish schools...

I thought instead of applying to really good schools who offer need based aid to internationals (which is pretty damn competitive), I could aim for merit aid at a less prestigous school.

If you’re going to apply to safeties, there’s no real point of coming to America. I’m sure in your country (unless you live in a war torn area) there’s definitely a better university for cheaper and better education. But that’s my 2 cents.

If you really love America that much, I’m afraid that most schools don’t give too much merit aid for internationals. State universities don’t give much merit aid do they?

^^
You’re absolutely right, actually. But most Korean colleges don’t accept SATs. I had to choose between a Korean or an American school when I was a freshman, and I chose this. I did apply to one college that does accept SATs and APs, but it’s pretty competitive as well, and by no means a safety.

As a general rule, international undergraduate students are usually not eligible for aid (need-based or merit) at most public universities, as their limited funds are usually restricted to citizens.

For example, you are excluded from receiving any of the major school-sponsored scholarships at ASU:

Most of the private scholarships at ASU also have citizenship requirements, and for the few that don’t, you will be competing against citizens for relatively small dollar amounts (under $1,500).

It might be easier to find merit aid at private schools that are actively recruiting international students.

Apply to the Macaulay Honors Program at CUNY Hunter. I’m there now and it’s amazing! Free single room in NYC (25th street too), free new shiny macbook pro’s, $7500 grant money, full tuition, arts pass, etc. You can’t beat it. Not exactly a safety for anyone though even with your stats. Also considering your an international that’ll make it a lot harder too as it’s almost all New Yorkers.

There is alot of public universities that offer merit based scholarships. Louisiana State Univeristy,University of New Orleans,University of Louisiana,Univeristy of Alabama…

This colleges will give you full tuition scholarships…
