Hello
Im currently at student a Santa Monica College and im looking to transfer to a 4 year university majoring in International Relations.

I know in California: UCSD, Berkley and UCD have good IR Programs but I was wondering if it would be best to transfer to a school in the DMV area (D.C., Maryland, Virginia) because you are surrounded by the government and from what I heard from a friend you are more likely to get an internship

is this true ?

I am an IR major too, and I would choose the DMV area.

I’m an International Relations major at American University in D.C.

I will tell you that 80% of students at AU intern and other surrounding schools like Georgetown, George Mason, George Washington like AU have great programs in IR and have great prospect in their career fields by creating connections in the DC area. If DC isn’t right for you (which might be a bit weird because DC is so vibrant and geared towards young adults) then I say try schools in NY… mainly NYU was one of my bigs when I was choosing colleges. Other great IR schools on the east are Cornell, Johns Hopkins, etc.

But yup, every IR or International Studies major I talk to in Cali (I came from Cali) say it’s boring out there and you really don’t have the same opportunities you would have with the IR field out here in DC. And trust me… I know a lot of IR students because I did Model UN and all of them went to the UC system and it’s just flat out boring. But if you’re gung ho on staying in Cali… try USC… they have a great IR program.
