Is Rutgers University a good school for Biomed? I am going to apply to its New Brunswick campus. I can afford it but not sure how good is it academically.

Thanks everyone, and especially pierre for helping me out!

I don't think Rutgers is well known for its bioengineering program, it has good engineering majors, I just don't think biomed is one of them

I'll try to find some cheap schools for you that have good biomed programs

Here are the total tuition and room/board costs for each of the top ranked biomedical engineering programs (costs may be more with transportation, fees, extra living costs etc...)

Johns Hopkins University $49,278
Georgia Institute of Technology $30,621
University of California–San Diego $39,752
University of Washington $30,468
Duke University $47,525
Boston University $48,468
University of Pennsylvania $48,148
Massachusetts Institute of Technology $47,250
Rice University $39,746
Case Western Reserve University $44,842
University of Michigan–Ann Arbor $40,591
Northwestern University $48,420
Stanford University $47,212
University of California–Berkeley $44,034
Washington University in St. Louis $48,884
University of Pittsburgh $30,686
University of Virginia $37,420
University of Texas–Austin $34,298
Columbia University $49,306
University of Utah $22,768
Vanderbilt University $49,033
California Institute of Technology $44,583
University of Wisconsin–Madison $28,828
Carnegie Mellon University $48,584
Cornell University $48,194
Purdue University–West Lafayette $31,154
University of California–Davis $40,634
University of Minnesota–Twin Cities $20,947
Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute $48,720

University Of Utah, University Of Wisconsin-Madison, University Of Minnesota-Twin Cities, Purdue University - West Lafayette, University Of Pittsburgh, University Of Washington, and Georgia Tech appear to fit your range nicely.

How high will you be willing to go for private universities? But I mean according to these rankings you should probably go to a public school since there isn't much difference between the academic quality between privates and publics in terms of engineering.

I am ready to go to private if they are ivy leagues or top ones like John Hopkins(I will manage them through loans or other means). But I will not spend $50,000 for going into average or below average private universities. In such case, I would prefer public over private.

My current list is as follows:
1) Columbia University (I know its realllllyyyy hard, even impossible for me. But giving it a try)
2) Georgia Tech
3) John Hopkins (looks tough to get in but worth a try)
4) Rutger NB
5) University of Michigan
6) University of Connecticut(I qualify for merit scholarship which reduces tuitions to half so around $15,000)
7) University of Virginia

Can you also chance me for all of this based on my rough profile posted at the beginning of the thread? Thanks

If money is a huge issues, one of the best deals around is the Macaulay Honors College at CUNY. It offers free tuition, some of the campuses offer housing,a free laptop and up to $7500 for study abroad etc. Here's the link Macaulay Honors College | Prospective Students

collegebiomed, what are your grades like? and what are you ranked in your high school class?

and if you're 100% sure that you're gonna go biomed, I would drop at least Rutgers and maybe UConn (unless you desparately need the scholarship) since they aren't as good for biomedical engineering

I have straight A's since 9th grade and my current class rank is 53/1067 students(top 6%). I am expecting to get around 25-30ish rank by the end of junior year(top 3-4%)

My class rigor is the undoubtedly the most difficult in math and science field. My math and science course load is the best you can take in my high school(All Ap - -- Calc AB,BC; Physics, Biology, Chemistry) The only thing I am lacking is that I take honors English and Social Studies and not AP.

bump ........................

Oh I think you have a very good chance at all of those schools, your test scores are in the range for Johns Hopkins and you have straight A's. I think that you should be fine! :)

Do you think John Hopkins is a high or low reach for me? Or is it a match?

I think that it's a match to a low reach. It really shouldn't be a problem for you to get in.

FYI though since you're an international student, John Hopkins is in Baltimore which is one of the worst cities in the US for crime. But the homicide rate is getting better (I think it's dropped 40% over the last 2 years) and there is stuff to do in Baltimore like shopping and restaurants and sports games.
