Hello.
I am applying to U of Pennsylvania, Princeton, Duke, Cornell and michigan ann arbor as an international student for engineering.

Do i need to submit financial documents to any of the above mentioned universities at the time of applying provide I am applying for aid to princeton, cornell and michigan?

ok, I am not asking about Financial Aid, I wan’t to know if I have to submit financial documents because international students are required to show there financial capabilities as not all colleges offer aid.

You need to provide financial documentation to get a student Visa. Without that in hand I don’t believe your applications will be considered. You have to show means to support yourself while in the country and the means to pay your tuition for 4 years.

This should have been taken care of months ago if you plan on attending in 2010. You can’t get this done now by Jan 15.

Do cornell, michigan, upenn, duke, princeton harvard stanford and mit offer athletics scholarship? If yes then tell me what is the procedure to apply. I am Indian National Road Cycling Champion ( Is this achievement fine to get scholarship?)

I think you’re off a bit. While its true that you will need to submit that documentation EVENTUALLY, I think what carreshwell is asking is if he/she needs to submit such documentation UPON submitting the app. That is, the due date for the application (Jan 1 etc.)

I have the same question myself, as I was under the impression that such documentation is only required for the visa, and as such can be submitted AFTER admittance to a college / university. Any thoughts?

By the way, this is for a not-requesting-financial-aid-as-an-international situation.

Michigan, Duke and Stanford give athletic scholarships in the sports in which they field teams, but no U.S. universities field cycling teams. Students don’t apply for athletic scholarships; coaches of university teams contact student-athletes with scholarship offers.

I THINK that you’re only required to submit extra things if you’re applying for aid as an international, and you would then have to submit those by the deadline. I think that you would only need to prove you have the money to pay when you try to get a visa; I’m not sure about this, but you should probably submit your application now and send an e-mail to the admissions office asking them about this. If they actually want something extra, you can send it in then (though I doubt they’d ask for anything IF you’re not applying for aid).

I got into a school as an international without having to submit anything extra, but I’m SURE that you’ll need to prove that you can pay when you apply for the visa.

–> that’s what I think also, estrat1. But I can’t be sure of each college’s requirement.

Note that there are exceptions that state the requirement clearly… Like Johns Hopkins. (required by Jan 1) I fell into this trap and I can’t possibly prepare documents by then… so I’m forced to drop my application. Grr.

If you don’t want their money, you need to show that you can afford tuition. Please check with individual schools. There’s always something on their website especially for international students. However, Princeton is need-blind to internationals, so I know for sure you don’t need to send any “proof” in.

The OP has several threads going. I forgot on this one he/she had not stated that they need aid. Thus my answer on the financial means documentation

The OP needs to be realistic. It is Dec 29, no student visa application let alone approval, no aid paperwork filled out, apps not submitted, and he/she has not researched the schools to find out which ones are need-blind for internationals let alone research how athletic scholarships work and which schools give them.

Oh, and these are some of the most difficult schools in the country for admission. Either the OP is ■■■■■■■■ or is just simply throwing darts at a board.

Note, however, that you don’t really need to start student visa applications now. That comes in when you’re actually admitted to colleges.

In case someone reads Iron Maiden’s post and starts panicking.

For anyone with similar concerns as well:

I called up places like Uwash, Umiami, Northwestern - these all don’t need financial docs until you are admitted. At least, that’s how they worded it on the phone.

A friend who mailed Duke, Cornell, and UPenn a while back also told me that these colleges do not require financial docs either, until after admit. Again, it will do nothing but good to double check yourself.

Note that this is for international students who DO NOT REQUIRE financial aid.

There may be exceptions that I’m not aware of. Which is why I urge everyone to take anything they read here with a grain of salt, and do some of your own research.
