International Student looking for full ride

@Barekk I’m doing them for MIT, but I also checked and most of the schools I’m applying to take them into account for scholarships.

@jym626 I’m from Spain, the only exposure to any SAT tests is what I’ve gotten from the internet, I had to wake up at 0230 to go to the test center, it’s perfectly normal that I forgot that guessing had no penalty.

Being tired is understandable. But when, in all your SAT practice and scoring, did you experience a penalty for guessing?

@41ADAN can you share which schools take SAT subject tests into consideration for scholarship? Just curious because that’s not something I’ve seen in the the schools I’ve looked at so far.

^not for straight “merit”, but for schools that have holistic admissions and offer financial aid to international, SAT subjects are in some ways more reliable than the strict SAT as they rely less on how standardized tests “work” and more on actual knowledge.

@jym626 look, every other test I’ve ever taken has a penalty for guessing, I was tired, I was low on time, my first thought was “let’s move on to the other questions”, guessing never occurs to me at first so by the time I remembered that I could just guess the ones I didn’t answer without penalty it was too late.

@3scoutsmom
honestly right now I don’t remember but I’m pretty sure at least one of their websites mentioned that everything you put in the application is taken into account for the scholarship, including test scores from subject tests, and anyway I assume that some of the most competitive merit scholarships that are only granted to 10-20 students take into consideration mroe than just SAT.

@MYOS1634 I agree that subject tests can be very helpful for admissions, especially for certain students like internationals and homeschoolers, but I’ve not yet seen a school that specifically states they take subject SAT tests into consideration for scholarships.

What other tests have a penalty for guessing?

Most tests abroad so. Op probably spend 12 years with penalty for guessing.

@jym626 Almost every single multiple choice test I’ve ever taken had penalty for guessing, such is the spanish education system.

@Barekk 3.6, I think. Haven’t seen my transcript recently, but that sounds about right.

@41ADAN It’s done, don’t stress about it, nothing can be done about it. Focus on the rest of your app, unless you want to register for December.

Is that test policy specific to Spain or do other European education systems penalize for guessing/wrong answers? Not meaning to push- just curious.

@jym626 I don’t know about other countries, by the way my choice of words was poor, while that policy is applied in the vast majority of cases, it usually depends on what the teacher believes adequate, however, it’s extremely rare to have an exam in which guessing isn’t penalised, and usually it’s on less relevant tests that it happens, at least in my experience.

@gigichuck You expect to get a scholarship with a 3.6? Ur school must be extremely difficult so it can explain such gpa otherwise i dont know if a 3.6 would be competitive enough

For example , my school is the hardest in my country and i got a gpa of 3.75, which turns out to be pretty good

Extremely difficult is an understatement. Deadly would be more accurate. The pass mark is 3.2. Any less and you’re asked to withdraw. Our valedictorian has a 3.7. The other top 3 have 3.6s. The rest hang between. The work load is awful. If you’re a top student you also have competitions, and you will manage everything or fail and fall out. 7 to 5, Monday to Saturday. Yes, Saturday. So, yes, I think my GPA is way on the high side for my school.

Sorry for the rant lol. I’m feeling a little insecure about my GPA as well, but my transcript shows everything. I’m hoping my SAT will balance it out either way.

When are you planning to apply? What are the 1300/1900 scores?

I’m applying for fall 2018. The scores are a friend’s @jym626

CC doesn’t allow the “ask for a friend”.

Yeah but I was clearly hypothetical. I said if a person. CC doesn’t allow hypothetical questions?

I took it as a hypothetical, if a student is in x or y or z situation…
