International Student looking for full ride

I have a feeling that if you’d won the Marquis you’d have had some sort of trumpet and fanfare. So, probably not. But I may be wrong (I don’t know anyone who’s won it).

@MYOS1634  That’s alright though. They meet full need anyway

I applied to all the Ivies except Penn
Rejected at 5 of them
Waitlisted at Columbia
Accepted at Dartmouth

Financial Aid leaves $4.3k per year.

Congrats on Dartmouth!
It is a great school, was my first choice among Ivies.
Their engineering department is really great!
I think 4.3$ totally worth to pay to this college but it will be still fully your choice where to attend.

I’m really humbled to have all these acceptances, and I thought my Princeton rejection wouldn’t hurt, but it does. I’ve gotten into great schools, and I don’t understand why I’m feeling this way. I never even believed I would get in, but it still hurts. In time I’ll get over it, but tonight, I feel very sad.

It is understandable.
Remember, you always have grad school option! After bachelor degree at any of your choices and your determination, I am sure, you will get into your top-choice graduate school!

@gigichuck Is 4.3k doable?

Forget Princeton. You don’t really know Princeton just your dream of it.

So it’s down to Amherst, Wesleyan or Dartmouth.

Wow, three excellent acceptances, all different enough that you’d find preferences.
Yes rejection hurts even when your hope was so small you didn’t know it was there. But you’re going to college next year, to a great place you’ll have the luxury of choosing. Focus on that.

Part of your reaction may be simply exhaustion. You’ve been on an emotional roller coaster for months! Be nice to yourself, take a few days to simply relax and not make any decisions, then focus on your amazing application success. World-class schools want you and will offer you a lot of money to attend!

@gigichuck Has your financial package from Amherst come in?

Thank you. I feel so much better.

@gearmom Yes, $4.3k is doable, but not optimal. I have problems with tax so Amherst wants different documents. I’m not done with them all.

I got the Lafayette Marquis Scholarship, but $3500 is loans which is…not at all optimal. Still about $4000 left over.

@gigichuck You need to make sure that your package includes the required healthcare cost which will be about 2K.

For Sophomore - Senior year: you can save a lot of money by sharing off campus housing and making your own food. Rice, lentils, beans, eggs, carrots, bananas (probably the only really low cost fruit) should all be low cost. As a student, I would look at getting an Instant Pot for quick cooking and saving money. I think that you could save 3-4k by living on your own. You can also save money on books. @MYOS1634 Any cost saving suggestions?

Amherst students live on campus all 4 years with room and board covered, and low income students packages have no loans. They also include health insurance and a stipend to buy cold weather clothing, at least it used to be. Get those documents in ASAP, you will be pleasantly surprised.

^ @CottonTales I would also lean towards Amherst for @gigichuck over Dartmouth. I think they will be the most supportive.

@gearmom Why Amherst though? Right now I’m on neutral ground. I like Dartmouth for the great outdoors, which I love, and D1 sports. Also for the engineering degree.

I like Amherst for the Consortium and Umass Amherst close by.

I think both are undergraduate-focused, so even there? Both have similar ranks and rep, and computer science/engineering is more a prove-yourself domain.

I also would choose Dartmouth not just for ambiance but also for future prospect IF IT IS AFFORDABLE FOR YOU. I am sure Dartmouth has more active engineering researches and resources for employments after graduation, which will very very important for you.

Lol @paul2752 .I have to laugh at the ambience comment. My kid went to both Amherst and Dartmouth and it is pretty much the same.

@CottonTales Did they transfer out of one or undergrad then grad?

Undergrad and grad. 9 years total between the two.

I was using ‘ambiance’ in place of gigichuck’s description of “great outdoors, which I love, and D1 sports.” Never said Dartmouth’s ambiance was better than Amherst.

EDIT: @gigichuck did you know Amherst College is in partnership with Dartmouth so that Amherst graduates can earn BA from Amherst and BSc in engineering from Dartmouth? Maybe it really doesn’t matter where to go in this case.
