International Student looking for good 'party schools' in the U.S. of A.!

Hey college people ;)

To introduce myself, I'm a 2nd year law student from Germany. I am very much looking forward to next year: My semester abroad will take place from August to December 2011.

There are a bunch of partner universities from which I can choose and I'd certainly love to go to the US. Apart from that, there are a few other good possibilities, including:
- Oxford
- Cambridge (Trinity)
- University of Sydney
- University of Singapore
- University of Hong Kong

I'm looking for the real college feeling. American Pie movies are not realistic, but you may get the direction I'm heading for. Basically, I only have three criteria:
- a good reputation of the law faculty or the university as a whole
- a nearby airport with proper connections to some major cities
- and, most importantly: It's gotta be a party school at its best. I want chicks en masse and a lot of wild college parties. I'm obviously exaggerating, but my main question would be which one of the following universities is considered to be the best "party school". I'd love to have a great time with a lot of international and American students!

These are the universities I can choose from, please don't name any new ones:
Boston College Law School
Boston University
Cornell
Duke
Emory
NYU
Stanford
Berkeley
Univ. of California, Hastings College
University of Colorado at Boulder
Univ. of Maryland
Univ. of Michigan
Univ. of Miami
Univ. of Pennsylvania
Univ. of Virginia (heard good things about this place)

Thanks for your help. I will even bring ze German beer!

See you next year :D
your German, Simon.

My man, finally someone who is selecting schools based on what matters than ephemeral crap like academics- UVa and UPenn are good schools for partying and NYU. Boston College you would do a significant amount of going out too. I dont know about the rest. Concerning HKU though, my friend went there and judging from my discussion with her, I doubt she “partied”

Any of the state schools would be good for partying. I think I disagree with Sefago about UPenn being a good party school. I’m not saying there isn’t beer, but its an IVY and the kids are there to learn. You will find more kids willing to party at the state schools because they tend to take it less seriously (they are paying less to go to a bigger school with less work). Any school in a city, particularly New York or Boston, will give you the best nightlife America has to offer, but you will be mostly drinking in bars. If you want Animal House style college parties, think UC Boulder or something in that vein. This is splitting hairs a little bit though. The reality is that college is college and there is drinking, drugs, girls, and hookups everywhere.

People study a lot at penn but they go out too during the weekends. Ok, I was not thinking of American pie party. Well that only happens in movies . . . and at state schools. The only two places where fun die are UChicago and Caltech

I thought someone would never ask a question like this on CC. I’m only a senior in high school myself, but I’ve heard enough to try and pass on some of what I’ve heard. Duke throws down. Hard. The fraternity scene is major there, so big parties, and its reputation does all the talking. It seems to have everything you’re looking for. And don’t forget the schorschbock ;P

You do realize that LAW is a graduate program in the US, don’t you? So if you will be at a law school, count on studying all day - law students don’t party. If you will be doing an undergraduate program, that’s a different story.

^^^

Right…some of the law schools aren’t even on the main campuses (where I would imagine most of the partying takes place.)

And, where will you be living? In an off-campus apt? If so, not much partying to be had there.

Since you’ll be here for the fall semester, I suggest picking a school that has a strong football program…like UMich, BC, or Stanford. Then, at least, you’ll get the tailgating aspect.

Stanford, Penn or Duke. Great schools, beautiful campuses, smart kids, lots of parties. Great places to make future contacts among Americans who will be leaders.

university of iowa

Thanks for the answers, guys. I absolutely want some “Animal House” or “American Pie” style parties, I mean, that’s (one of the reasons) why I’m coming to the US after all!

Yes, I am aware of the fact that “LAW” is a graduate program. This doesn’t really matter though since we’re international exchange students. I’m working my butt off here in Germany (70 to 90 hrs a week) and I want nothing more than an easy-going, fun semester abroad. I’ve spoken to quite some exchange students from our univ. and most of the exchange programs were a joke tbh.

sefago, thanks for the helpful advice mate. I talked to an exchange student here in Germany and she told me the same regarding Hong Kong. UVa and Boston sound fantastic! I’ve heard WVU must be a killer party school, but unfortunately it’s not one of our partner unis.

So, I guess it comes down to these gems:

 • UVa
 • UPenn
 • Stanford
 • Duke
 • Cambridge, Trinity
 • Univ. of Sydney

Pff… i’m sorta spoilt for choice.

P.S.: I will indeed bring some German beer! ;)

Thanks,
Simon

Get drunk, puke all over yourself and pass out. Repeat, over and over. There, you’ve had the American party school experience without having to leave Germany. You have nothing to offer an American university and will only take the spot of someone who wants to actually study here. So stay home, please.

Duke, hands down

Virginia, Michigan, Duke

I don’t see how the OP’s sensible request warranted this sort of extreme response. He clearly mentions that he wants to study at a good university here too so what’s wrong with him experiencing the “complete American college experience” as well?

Whoever says law students don’t party has clearly never heard of Tucker Max.
UVA = the greatest place on earth (no exaggeration)
“Don’t let anyone tell you different: The only good part about Duke is that it’s 15 minutes from Chapel Hill.” - a former duke law grad student
U Colorado parties HARD. Literally EVERYONE in Colorado drinks a lot and does more drugs than sane or safe.
I don’t know which Miami you’re referring to, but if its the one in Florida, that might be an okay choice too, but I’d definitely recommend UVA and U Colorado over Miami

Law students don’t party with undergrads on the whole. They’re part the stage of pong 5 nights/wk and the antics the OP see,s to be looking for. He’s a few years too late, grad students are a bit creepy on the undergrad scene.

That said, Duke, Stanford and Penn hands down for great schools that party.

^ LMAO at the Tucker Max reference. Never thought I would hear that name thrown around on CC.

Alexis4- Tucker Max is a complete @-hole. Any girl who hooks up with him should be ashamed of herself.

???

How do you know that you’d be accepted to the American law schools on your list? Those are competitive admissions law schools.

OP perhaps doesn’t realize that grad students & undergrads have very different social lives in this country!
