International Student on Purdue/Penn State

Hello, my name is Matheus and I'm a Brazilian high school student (2º ano do colegial, equivalent to the 11st year).

I'd like to know what are my chances for admission on Purdue University or Penn State University Park. My intended major is Aerospace Engineering.

My SAT score is 1800 (640 Math, 630 Reading, 530 Writing) and my TOEFL is 100. We don't have GPAs in Brazil, but my grades are mostly A and B (A in Physics and Math). My school is very competitive. It's ranked 11st in São Paulo's (biggest city in Brazil) school ranking. We also don't have official student rankings, but according to the last vestibular mock (university entry exam) and to my counselor I'm ranked 2nd out of 108.
Thank you for helping me.

Whew, no replies? Please help me.

Good luck,. Looks pretty good

Thank you :D

Yes, your SAT is definitely average to low average, but I am sure admissions people will understand that.
What is so special about you, that the adcom will definitely want you?

just asking.
good luck

I’m really into languages. Besides portuguese, I speak quite fine English, a bit Spanish and I’m studying German right now.

I do some extracurriculars too. Not a lot, because our EC structure in Brazil is pretty lame. I do swimming classes 2x week and volunteer work. I’m participating in a Cuban Missile Crisis simulation this year and maybe next I will be on the organizing committee. I’m first generation college student too.

I don’t know if admissions people really consider race as an important factor, but I’m brown (white mother, black father).

I don’t think I stand out of the crowd but I also don’t think I’m a bad candidate.

Thanks for helping me :D

No problem brother.
You said Aerospace Engineering though… And your Math is not that good on the SAT.
Did you take subject tests?

Also, is your family financially capable of paying college tuition?
No problem.

No, you are definitely not a bad candidate.
In fact, you are quite strong :)

I will take them on June 5. My grades will probably be not as good as I wish they would. In any case, I talked to my Chemistry teacher and he agreed to give me some extra classes so I can take both the SAT II and the Brazilian Chemistry Olympics.

I’m just going to do the SAT II this year to get some experience.

Concerning the SAT Math grade, I know it’s not great. But I will take the test next year too so I hope I can improve them. I bought some books, hope they help me :D

Thanks for all your attention.

PS: about the tuition thing, we’re working on it. I’m just going to apply if we are financially capable to do it. I really don’t know if we will be able to pay for it but there’s the possibility and I think it’s way better for me to do the SAT and have good grades but not have the money than have the money and absolutely no preparation.
