Hi I am an international student from mauritius who just graduated high school and i was wondering about my chances of admission in a US college. I have a combined SAT score of 2050 and ill probably take math lvl2 and chem as sat subjects. My country's educational system is based on the british one so we do not have GPA nor rank but we do the Cambridge 'O' and 'A' Levels.

For O level: I got grade 'A*' in maths, english language, french, chem, physics and Grade 'A' in additional maths, biology and computer science.
For 'A' level i got grade A for maths, chem and physics as well as grade 'A' for general paper and french at AS level

As for extracurricular Ive been doing a bit of sports that i like (swimming and badminton) for the last 4 years and some literary activities (mainly french based): I once represented my country in the Indian ocean inter island french dictation competition and last year ive obtained the 1st prize in a french dissertation competition on a national basis which was awarded by a french organisation promoting the language in my country after a 2-year course with the said organisation. Unfortunately i have not done any community work (there are not many opportunities for that here but thats not an excuse, i know)

So what kind of colleges do you think i can apply to? (ah yes sry i should have mentioned that earlier but ill need huge financial aid as though we live comfortably here my family does not have 30k-50k to spare a year for my college education and i know that the financial factor is considered for international students in many colleges).

Thanks in advance for your help guys! cheers...

How much can you family contribute towards your college? The word “Hugh” does not work for us to comment. If you mean Full Ride, or go to college FREE with “comfortable” family income, then there is few or none college will meet your needs.

@artloverplus 1st Thanks for caring to comment ok ill try to give more details… my parents make 17k a year which is not enormous but is about enough to live ‘comfortably’ here and these 17k are mostly from pensions (retired father) and as you may see we are far from the 30-50k required and due to our expenses (+ having a younger brother still in high school) i think as you said that i would need a full ride… and from what i learnt the only schools which give full ride to int. students are super super competitive…and i guess my stats are clearly not enough…The only thing that has me clinging onto hope is that i have friends who got full rides to some of them (stanford, princeton, cornell and 1 presently in MIT) but i guess they were in another league lol

It is your SAT the problem, if you get to 2300 then a lot of doors will open for you. Sorry to say this. Your friends are not you, so you cannot equate.

OTOH, are you the top, if not the few top students in your country? What is the class rank and if English is your second language? What is your Tofel score? If all the stars lined up, you maybe able to qualify for top schools in the USA>

@artloversplus ok ill give the SAT another go and then decide based on the scores…As for class rank we are not provided with one in the British system we just do the O and A levels and get the grades…and in fact french was the first language i learnt at home but my pre-primary, primary and secondary education were all done in English which is the language of instruction at my high school and the 1st national language (supposedly)…anyway thanks a lot for all your input!

Here is a thread from a student in a situation similar to yours. The thread addresses International applicants, GAP years and reapplying after being rejected.
