hi my name is Mathieu and im from France. im sorry in advance for english mistakes! Im writing here, because i need some help. I want to realize my american dream ! And i made researchs about universities and i found that UCberkeley is corresponding to me. But to be honest i had a very very very difficult high school life. Ive been harassed since the beginning from students ( because htey thought that i was gay which isnt the case) and from teachers. I lost 14 persons of my family during my high school life ( cancer ,old ). Add my problems with my dad. My teachers destroyed me in school reports, saying that i wasnt serious but they dont know how i felt … Do you guys think that still can attend uc berkeley with an average gpa of 2.7-3.4? I wrote a book about psychological problems and family problems and i hope it will help ! im waiting for your advices! thanks
As an International applicant, you need a Minimum UC GPA of 3.4 to even apply and at the level, it would barely make you competitive for UC Merce. The UC’s have their own GPA calculation and I do not know how your grades translate into the US/UC system.
I am very sorry for all your hardships but top students with perfect GPA’s are often rejected from a school like UCB. Also as an International applicant, you will receive no financial aid so make sure even before you apply that $65,000/year is affordable.
Average UC capped weighted GPA for 2018 Freshman admits was 4.23.
Why no financial aid?
It’s very heartbreaking because i put to much effort in this thing. I want to realize my american dream but the thing is that life werent equal, not for me… I didnt ask for this type of thing, it’s not my fault… It doesnt represent a single level of my real abilities and skills. That’s heartbreaking how the society isnt taking care about
external factors. …
I mean is my dream dead? I want like a great university for business, or economics! With like a great campus etc. ( i look like a kid with my requirements, typical international student requirements)
There is no aid because it is a public university funded by California taxpayers, so it only subsidizes California residents; out of state and international students pay full fees. There are private colleges in the US that do offer aid for internationals, and are not as competitive to get into. I think there is actually an active discussion thread on this in the “search and selection” subforum at the moment, which may give you some ideas.
The UC’s give no financial aid to out of state American or international students.
Thank you for your answers! Ok i will maybe look for another university, but to be honest im trying to integrate a well known university! ( not harvard lol) but you know what i mean! I think that i can explain my evolution in personal statements dont you agree?
I cant find the section
@ilvermornyisolt
Go to the left of this page. See where it says, TOP FORUMS?
The first bullet is “College Search and Selection”
Look at that forum.
If you need funding, you need to apply far and wide. Don’t expect the top schools to be able to accept you and fund you. Look at private universities.
i can pay 47 000/year
public universities arent giving financial aids?
@ilvermornyisolt
Check Umass Lowell. Give aid for internationals.
Or Umass Boston, don’t give aid for international students, but provably you have the scores and the money enough
to get in.
Some public universities give aid, but private are more generous.
SEE and READ post #5.
Let me repeat:
Most public universities are funded by the state’s taxpayers. (UC’s CSU’s, SUNY’s, UW’s, etc.)
Their priority for funding goes to the residents of their states who have been paying high taxes for years.
Those public funds provide monies for streets, highways, universities, public schools, law enforcement, hospitals and clinics, etc. The funding runs out.
Why would a public university, that is underfunded, fund a non-resident who has not paid anything into that state? These schools typically have thousands of students, clamoring for a spot, willing to pay whatever amount just to attend.
Okay which means i have to search for private universities, thanks for the info!
I would like to add that i scored a 1520 on my SAT ( simulation ) I made some researches about universities that i decided to try. And to be honest i thought that i were able to integrate public universities, ( financial aid) but after i saw your answer about financial aid from public universities i switched my researches. But before switching i would like to share with you my ‘’ target public universities ‘’ to get your opinions! I definetely wanted to integrate Berkeley but it’s impossible due to the low gpa and the absence of financial aid. But i also have universities like, Virginia Tech, Urbana Champaign IL, Auburn,Colorado State University, Texas AM, University of Indiana Bloomington! i hope that i can at least integrate one of these universties. im waiting your answers guys thanks you in advance
Where’s that simulation from?
What’s your French moyenne (just the score) each term this year?
With a 3.5 and a 1500+ you can get into UAlabama Honors and several CTCL’s (colleges that are dedicated to students who want a student-centered environment; some on the list would be too selective based on what you’ve shared so far but otherwise you’d have possibilities).

Do the colleges in your country offer grants to international students? It’s great if they can afford that. Most US students don’t get enough financial aid to be able to afford residential college so they attend colleges close to home. Do you have options near where you live?
If you can pay $47,000 USD/year there are US colleges you can attend as a full pay student even with a 2.7 GPA and lowish test scores. If you search by cost I’m sure you’ll find some.
So 47 000 is fine?
