international student

hi, i was reading on the jhu website that as an international student who needs aid, my chances of getting in are much lower because they cannot meet the need of every international candidate

so, i was wondering if it would be wise to send a brief essay on why I would like to attend JHU?

do you think that is fine? or, should I not submit one. Will submitting one lower my chances? (I understand that it may not increase my chances)

your opinions are greatly appreciated!

does JHU even care if you are interested in them? i know some other colleges really want to know "why" you want to go there, what about jhu?

I think I read somewhere on the JHU board that,
1. The admissions officers evaluate internationals and admit/reject them without considering their financial options.
2. Then the admits go onto the financial aid office and then they project the amount of aid that the applicant needs. If the need is out of JHU's reach, they will ultimately have to reject the applicant.

Sooo.. if the info I typed above stands correct, I'm guessing that your letter won't be read by the financial office and wont have any impact on your 'chances'.

Yes, admission for international students applying for financial aid is more competitive because of our inability to fund all international students and therefore our need aware policies.

You may send a supplemental essay stating your interest in JHU but it will play little role in whether you are admitted and whether you receive financial assistance. Submitting a letter will not lower your chances.

A student's interest in JHU is a minor factor, but we do not go as far as other schools in tracking a student's level of contact.

cool, I don't think I will send an essay on why I want to come to jhu
i will send another shorter essay though to supplement my common app one, hopefully this will help (if even a bit) in the admissions process

thank you!
