For a state university, Michigan has a pretty large international student community. About 1,200 (5%) undergraduate students and over 2,000 (15%) graduate students come from abroad.

I myself am Lebanese (yeah, like Corporal Klinger...minus the dress!) Ann Arbor is a great place for international students. Over 3,000 (10%) students, 500 (15%) faculty members and 5,000 residents of international backgrounds live in Ann Arbor...a city of 110,000. So one can certainly say that Ann Arbor has a cosmopolitan feel, even if it is a mid-sized city.

Futhermore, since the Detroit Airport is within a 25 minute drive from downtown Ann Arbor, it is convenient. Detroit has direct flights to Paris (my favorite city on Earth), London, Amsterdam, Rome, Frankfurt and Tokyo as well as to all major US cities. And those cities can pretty much take you to any major city around the World...so one never needs to have more than one stop to get home, no matter where home is.

Of course, since Michigan has a top 6 or 7 Engineering program and a top 7 or 8 MBA program, and given the fact that over 3,000 international students study at Michigan at any point in time, the University of Michigan has an incredible reputation internationally. In fact, in countries I have lived in (Germany, France, England, Lebanon and the UAE), Michigan paraphernalia is the most visible of any university.

Any of this year's applicants are internationals? Let us know if you have any questions.

Internationals compete with other internationals in that Michigan has quotas. However, it is about as difficult for internationals as it is for out-of-staters. What system of education do you follow? Which country are you applying from?

As for the dorms, I have noticed that at Michigan, dorms are generally neither good nor bad. I would recommend you pick a dorm on the "Hill" or in Central Campus. Do not pick a dorm on North Campus unless you plan on studying Engineering.

The weather in Michigan is pretty bad between late November and early March. January and February are the worst. But even the cold has its benefits. I am an Arab you know? Arabs are not used to the cold. I never saw snow until I got to Michigan. The first day of snow, I fell three times. The same person picked me up all three times!!! LOL But I got used to it after a while and by my fourth winter, I could get up on my own! hehe Seriously though, the cold has its own charm.

All of my four years in high school have been spent in the American educational system. I am attending to a public US high school right now in NJ.

I am actually applying to the Engineering School.

My bad winters, you mean just plain cold temperatures or lots of rain/snow?

Snow doesn't bother me. Neither does the cold. Rain, I prefer not to have.

Would you say social life is hindered between those months of bad weather?

can u give some advice over where else i should apply for engineering, im thinking of applying to UPenn, Umich, purdue, Cornell, uiuc, gatech, ucla. im not sure if upenn and cornell are my reaches though cause im international.

Hello Jarule, where are you in the UAE? Which school do you go to? I went to Choueifat, Abu Dhabi.

Anyway, with regards to the school on your list...they are excellent, but Penn is not really that good in Engineering, except for Biomedical Engineering, in which case Penn is actually very good.

What are your stats? I will tell you how much of a reach Cornell is (I did my graduate studies at Cornell). But as a rule, if Cornell is a reach, Michigan is a reach too. For Engineers, I would say they are about equally selective.

By the way, I would also remove UCLA from your list. Instead of UCLA and Penn, I would add UC-Berkeley, Wisconsin-Madison, Texas-Austin and Northwestern. Overall, I would look at them in this order:

GROUP 1)
Cal-Berkeley, Cornell and Michigan

so do u know anyone else whoz studying here? the schools full of lebanese people.
btw my stats are in the "what re my chances" section, plz tell me if its worth applying to those univerities cause i think all of are probably reaches for me. my post is one of the first ones " Chances at UMICH,UPENN,UCLA,....etc".Thanx for the advice

What are the chances of people from the UAE to be considering almost identical lists of school (Alexandre had almost an identical list like jarule) and who went or go to the same international school? I will put it as a 1-3% chance.

Mahras, you would be surprised!!! By the way Mahras, what are you doing in the Michigan forum? Aren't you supposed to be a Wharton guy all the way?hehe

hey there, i think ive finalized my list its Cornell, umich, wisconsin, uiuc, gatech, purdue.Im not really that keen on wisconsin though i would like to replace it with something more popular (for engineering), i never heard of it until i called Alex( btw, we were in the same city when i called him, he helped me a lot, thnx). i admit i dont know a lot about universities but i dont think a lot of people have heard of it in this region.

Jarule, Wisconsin is an excellent match for you. I say that for several reasons. First of all, it is a highly respected university, particularly in the sciences. Secondly, the campus is gorgeous and the city it is in (Madison) is awesome. Finally, Wisconsin is excellent in Engineering. It is ranked among the top 15 in Engineering. I would have recommended Texas-Austin, but UTA for an out-of-state Engineer would be more of a reach because 95% of its students are from Texas. I would not recommend another match over Wisconsin for Engineering.

Here are some rankings regarding Wisconsin according to the USNWR:
- Overall undergraduate ranking: #32
- Academic Reputation: 4.2/5.0 (tied with Rice University and ahead of Georgetown, Vanderbilt and Washington University).
- Overall undergraduate Engineering rank: #13 (tied with Johns Hopkins and Northwestern)

Thanks man! Few hours ago i saw the engineering programs rankings and Wisconsin is ahead in the list. Thats great! Im planning on adding another university to my list but it should be something like a satety. i dont think i have any safeties on my list! I was considering VirginiaTech or UT A&M. Which one of them could be my safety. If none canu suggest an alternative safety school? You told me to apply as soon as possibe to Michigan. The problem is that our school takes about 2 weeks to add transcripts and stuff and courier/mail would take it about 2 weeks(not sure) so it would reach there in early december, my sat2s would reach them close to 4th January so i think this would reduce my chances of admission consderably. And i would also be doing my sat1 again on Jan22nd it'd reach them in the end of february. I really need a safety cause if dont get in anywhere then i'd have no alternative other than studying in AUS or AUD (hehe).BTW Wisconsin application has to mailed to me (icantdownload it - no option to do that) so it would take a long time for that too.
