Hey! Okay I'm a US citizen but I moved from Uruguay and Spanish is my first-language. I'm also a first-generation college student. I'm passionate about international studies and I know that Macalester has one of the most impressive IS programs, international students, diversity, all awesome things. I want more info about Minnesotans (I've heard enough about the weather to have a decent idea of it :) and what the culture of the city is like. I am liberal politically and appreciate diversity but I'm a liberal in Utah so I do appreciate open mindedness. I also plan to be Pre-Med and am wondering about the impact on the workload as well as how possible it is to be an IS major and Pre-Med. I would love to interview with the school but money makes that impossible so any info you've got is probably really interesting to me :D. Sidebar: if any of you know anything about the 8 Of the Best Colleges thing and especially how much I get to talk to admissions counselors, that would be awesome! W GPA is around 4.5-4.7, ACT 32, I've taken 5 AP classes, (5,4,4,4,3) and am enrolled in 6 more this year (Econ, Gov, Calc, Eng/ Lit, Bio, Studio Art).

I encourage you to attend the 8 of the Best Colleges presentation in Salt Lake City on Wednesday, September 10. Registration for the program officially starts at 6:30pm and the program begins at 7:00pm. After the presentations, the college representatives will speak to students and parents. There is no problem at all with being an IS major and pre-med, because pre-med is not a major - it’s just a sequence of courses that you need to take to meet the requirements for admission to medical school (and have sufficient background to get a good score on the MCAT.) You should have no problem fitting the requirements into your schedule while getting your IS major done.
By the way, I’m impressed that MacAdmissions responded directly on this forum. I wish the other LACs had someone watching their forums and responding where approrpriate.
You sound like a wonderful student for Macalester - hope you applied. IS at Macalester is broad and deep - all Macalester students are touched by it, not just IS majors. As a parent of a senior, I’ve heard of no easy majors at Macalester. While it is possible to combine IS with pre-med, Going abroad is required for IS majors, but tricky for science majors. Most science majors who go abroad, go where they can attend universities so they keep up with their science requirements. But those same places and institutions may not offer the types of hands-on research for IS. That said, my daughter ran into a Mac alum who is working as a doctor with indigenous women in Bolivia. She had first gone to Bolivia as a junior for her semester abroad. So it can be done.
