Internationals, how do you cope with tuition?

So, why does everyone want to marry me? And I can't marry you, I'm Indian, you need to be American.

???
all i can say is harvard is need blind and if they take you they'll pay as much as you want them to pay (in my case more). princeton is also need blind. as is yale.
the smaller college may call themselves need blind but honestly they don't have enough resourced to pay for every int'l student they fancy. in any case getting in with sufficient financial aid is always an uphill task for an int'l.

taemi, every college that says they're need blind for international students IS need blind to the extent Harvard is, and currently there are only two "small colleges" that say so: Williams and Middlebury.

Yeah, really? If you want to assume something, go ahead and assume it, but don't mislead other people.

check carolyn's post. and click on the link there. "need blind doesn't mean full ride"...so they aren't need blind "to the extent harvard is".

Over there Arseus says:

"i've heard that middlebury is need-blind to int applicants. but i've also heard that they're packages are extremely poor. they were ranked as one of the schools where students don't like the aid packages. ur reaction answers my suspicion."

don't want to start an argument though, seeing as you are now affianced! ;)

$25,000 grant from Dartmouth (which is not need-blind)
$7,000 contribution from my parents
$3,000 grant from the Swedish government
$14,000 loan from the Swedish government
$2,000 work-study

= $51,000

I'm not allowed to work this summer since my work permit expired and I can't get it renewed, otherwise it'd be more.

frrrph, what exactly has changed about the CSN policies? I thought the interest rates were basically guaranteed to stay under 3% (currently 2.1%)... is that not the case? My parents have been telling me to borrow the maximum amount regardless of whether I can manage without it because the repayment terms are so generous.

Good ol' Sweden. So generous with its aid...
May I take this opportunity to say that Sweden is a wonderful country. Seriously.

But it is terribly cold up there, isn't it?

Indians do get aid (even full ride), but It's restricted to a specific group (Now we know where are taxes go..)

Or you can simply dug a 50 feet deep bore-well and then jump in it. [url=http://asterix2k.blogspot.com/2006/07/hole-in-one.html]Not only will the Indian government provide scholarship to you, TV channels would donate money to you/url. Just for jumping into a hole.

I meant from the Indian government, and it's our and not are. :o :o :o

Can you ask for a post to be deleted for grammar and typos?

In addition to the above, I was just notified that I've won a $3,000 outside scholarship that can be used to cover my expected student contribution. I guess it doesn't actually matter that I can't spend the summer working, then! So exciting. :)

@taemi: they claim to meet 100% of demonstrated need, and they do. colgate, oberlin and hamilton met mine, even though they're not need blind. i had circumstances that meant i could afford much less than my efc, and hamilton and oberlin looked at that, and uppled my financial aid by like $17k per year more than my expected EFC. is that not generous?

@camelia: how do i become a swedish citizen?

Middlebury greatly increased their aid packages this year for all students, including international applicants. Check out this link for testimonials from satisfied customers:

or perhaps you should correct your own english grammar first? hehe ;);)

Anyway, I also heard that another way to obtain the Green Card is to gain admission to grad school and acquire a masters degree, correct?

I know a friend who got his masters at a US university, and got his first job at the Federal Reserves as an INTERNATIONAL student. Now he has a green card and citizenship, weird eh?

And of course, the marriage option is quite appealing as well. I guess it's also the easiest/fastest option, which only requires you to persuade a girl to say YES. Hmm I can handle that. :)

This is awful... talking about "improper" ways of getting residence...

Report me :p

hahahhahahhaha i dont care .. take it easy i was just kidding

TheOneCurlyFry: all right! now we can have an argument! yessss! (life was getting rather dull...) would you like some more provocation or can we just start our war of words now!!!!!

Other than the bizarre suicide rate and cold, depressing weather and high taxes and expensive stuff Sweden is a pretty nice place!

haha, i wasn't trying to start an argument.

improper?! no, it isn't improper at all! why would marriage, a respected social institution be improper? =).

taemi, why don't you call me Kriti like everyone else on tIT?

JIMMY, to answer your question, grad school doesn't give you a Green Card, employment after grad school does, if your employer is willing to sponsor you. but then, you don't need to go to grad school to get employed. so basically, it's employment.

jimmy, just in case you are not aware of that, the Federal Reserve system is privately owned so it can hire anyone regardless of citizenship.

barium reply to my message :(
