Internet availability on campus

On our visit to Georgetown last year, the tour guide had mentioned something about an ongoing plan to make wireless internet access available throughout campus. But then when I spoke with her individually after the tour, she told me that she only meant public areas on campus. She said that the rooms themselves only had wired internet access and there wasn't a specific plan to extend wireless access to all the dorm rooms.

What is the current status of internet access on campus? Is it now possible to access the internet wirelessly from, say, the classrooms, cafeterias, library, and so on? Also, what about the dorm rooms? How inconvenient is it to only have wired access?

In general, Georgetown creates the impression of being a bit behind the curve in embracing technology. For example, the admissions process seems to be rooted in paper methodology, and the online application system was really frustrating to use, and it looks like decision letters only go out by mail. Does this pattern also continue for the students who attend? Are there good online course descriptions, online sign up for classes, and so on?

^ I want to know all of those things as well. I’m afraid that Georgetown is technologically behind based on how many problems they had with launching the transfer application- it was more than one month late. They also dont have online tracking of documents. I really want to go there but these things worry me. Any ideas ?

You can buy an inexpensive router and thereby have wireless access in your room–well under $100. Although I do agree with the larger point.

^ so you are trying to say that they have no wireless access in their rooms? Why should I have to get so much additional junk… I am thinking about transferring from Emory and now I really have second thoughts

Haha. Georgetown and internet… They’ve been promising wireless in the dorms since before I got here, and it’s still only in some of them. It’s not a huge hassle to just plug in or get a router (more like $25 than $100 if you get a really cheap one), but it is annoying. I have no idea why UIS doesn’t get its act together, although, honestly, it makes little difference in the grand scheme of things whether you have wifi or have to plug in.

Now, wifi is actually quite good in other places generally speaking. It’s in the library, all the classrooms, Leo’s (the dining hall), Selinger, etc. As for other technology issues, Georgetown does fairly well. Yes, course sign up is online and the system is, in my opinion, better than the ones my friends have to use. Course descriptions, for the most part, make their way online, but not for every class (see [2009-2010 Course Catalog | Georgetown University](http://courses.georgetown.edu/) to explore for yourself). As a matter of fact, most things at Georgetown happen online once you get there, which is convenient. When I studied abroad I had no problem doing anything, whereas friends at other universities often had trouble registering for the next year online, etc.

If it’s wifi in the dorms for you or bust, though, don’t go to Georgetown.

A list of all the places on campus with wireless can be found at [AirHoya: Covered Locations](http://uis.georgetown.edu/connecting/airhoyawireless/airhoya.locations.html)

Basically, all the academic buildings have wireless, as well as some of the residence halls. I never found the lack of wireless in my room to be a hindrance - my ethernet cord was long enough that I could be pretty much anywhere in my room and be plugged in as it is. In a perfect world, it would be a nice amenity to have, but in a world of limited budgets, I can see why they would prioritize other things.

Thanks for the specific info. My daughter really loved Georgetown when she visited last year and has applied (RD). We’ll wait and see if she gets in before worrying too much about WiFi in dorms. Perhaps in a few years every place on campus will be WiFi or alternatively everyone will have an iPhone or iPad with their own data service :).

Georgetown and technology just don’t mix.

Regardless of what anyone told you on the tour, Georgetown isn’t trying to get wireless everywhere on campus… That’s a total rumor. We have it in major places like classrooms, but I’m in my room right now, and having to use a cable. Yes, it’s annoying. But don’t base your college decision on it.

… of all the things to worry about…
