I believe the dorms use a wired internet connection? What about the libraries? Do they have wired connections or would I have to use wireless?

Yea, the dorms use ethernet, but wireless is usually available as well. Ethernet just guarantees a stable T1 connection without authentication. Wireless fluctuates and you have to authenticate every 2 hrs.

Most people use wireless in the libraries. I have yet to see anyone actually plugged in to an ethernet jack since not every table/seat has a jack.

The ethernet ports at Main Stacks do not always work in my experience, but typically I just use the wireless (AirBears, it's called) anyway.

Are we allowed to bring our own wireless router into the dorms to make the floor wireless? Maybe set up like a pay-to-access wireless network or something? xD

i've never seen someone actually plug into an ethernet jack @ a library. for that matter, i've never seen anyone plug in anywhere besides inside the dorm rooms. airbears is available in most places on campus, depending on distance from buildings. you will be required to enter your calnet id and passphrase to use airbears, however.
in the dorms, there is RESCOMP wireless, which also requires your calnet and passphrase. this is the one that requires relogging in every 2 hours. in units 1 and 2, there are wireless hotspots for RESCOMP on the 5th floors, though the signal reaches as far as the first and seventh floor lounges as well. i'm not sure how the wireless hotspot locations work in other dorms.

haha, entrepreneurial thinking, i see.
you can set up wireless for your room / floor, however it would be best not to share it with others, as their use will count towards your weekly 2gb bandwidth limit in the dorms.

***? there's a 2gb/wk limit in the dorms? what happens if you go over b/c I can can easily end up using 1gb/day...

It's been awhile since the dorms, but I believe it was a 5gb limit. Correct me if I'm wrong. And if you're looking to downloads lots of media, like movies, TV Shows, and music, DC++ is awesome. It's incredibly fast and doesn't count towards your bandwidth count.

it's 8 gb, which is actually quite a lot. when you download, just remember to delete the torrent when you're done, otherwise, it might upload and contribute to the bandwidth.

i agree with commonsense- dc++ is a godsend. you get media within minutes.

Residential Computing at UC Berkeley

my bad, looks like it's 8gb.

8GB is way more than enough. I was more or less the internet provider in my quad this year (as the router was mine and was under my rescomp account) and we never went over the limit; all four of us used my bandwidth.

You can set up your own router, but I think ResComp says you have to register it with them.

If someone uses your router and goes over the bandwidth limit, it's your problem (you'll lose internet until the next monday).

It's pointless (and actually pretty frowned-upon) to charge money since everyone get's their own connection, and in the Units Rescomp wireless is usually available.

If you're nice, you can set up a protected network and tell everyone on your floor the password.
